Sharmeka Moffitt Set Herself Afire

Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Martin and Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb announce during a news conference at the Franklin Parish Courthouse on Tuesday that Sharmeka Moffitt fabricated a story about being attacked and burned Sunday night at Civitan Park in Winnsboro.

Although they didn’t go into details, they said forensics evidence pointed toward Moffitt.

“Basically we had to follow the facts,” Cobb said. “This was a disturbing case for all involved. All indications show this was a self-inflicted situation.”

Police believe it was Moffitt who wrote “KKK” and “n*gger” on her car, before she set fire to herself. She then managed to call police afterwards.

Cobb and Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Martin said both Moffitt and her family still deserved the community’s prayers.

“This is a tragic situation,” Martin said.

It could be true, but I need some strong evidence before I believe she burned herself.

damn man , why why hopefully this is a lie. omg black people are going to look bad cause you know this story is going to get out their.

So sad, but in hindsight the evidence does point to self injury. All of her injuries were apparently in the front and her face wasn’t burned. Also, she just so happened to be right by a source of water where she could quickly put out the fire. IF it turns out that she lied, hopefully she gets the help that she needs.

@Yvette And the jailtime that innocent men could have possibly served

Pray for the girl to get the mental help she needs. When I first read this story, nothing made sense to me that this could randomly happen to someone. I couldn’t believe she was able to phone the police right after. And where were the witnesses?… It reminds me of that Canadian chick who blamed a black woman for tossing acid in her face when in fact she had done it all along. Best thing, they weren’t able to harm anyone else.

I’m so mad that there’s an Exxon Mobile gasoline ad next to this article though!

yIKES! This student at George Washington University did something like this a few years back. She kept complaining that someone was drawing swastikas on her door and the university installed cameras without her notification and caught her on camera drawing them. Sad…as if the world wasn’t bad enough with the racism and prejudice we actually have…

(I really hope this isn’t the case for Sharmeka.)

Remember Tawana Brawley (claimed gang raped by white men)

Susan Smith (claimed black men killed her kids)

Bethan Storro (not certain, I believe she claimed black women threw acid in her face)

Jennifer Carol Wilbanks (claimed kipnapped and rape by Mexican man)

    All hoaxes.

My aunt accidently burned herself and used the incident to falsely excuse her soon to be ex husband of setting her on fire. She is very vindictive, clearly.

    Sad stories.

Good examples, a whole thesis could be written on this.

I was thinking about all of these cases after reading this. Google Charles Stewart and see what you get. I’d like for some educated person to discuss this phenomenon, and who it effect most.

I’m not sure about the other examples but I don’t know if I can agree with Tawana Bradley as simply as hoax. The media played a huge role in the perceptions that we have on that young lady. There may be some truth to these ladies claims, we may never know

This is sad. The world that we live in is screwing up a lot of people’s brains. I am not sure if it is the amount of intese radio signals bouncing around, the food, overabundance of chemicals and plastics. I really hope she recovers from whatever sickness she is going through.

I also have to wonder if this is some form of clandestine attack on black people. Of a late there seems to be a disturbing trend of extremely bizarre things being done by black people and this was never the case. Hmmmmmmm.

Thank God I got rid of the microwave, wifi, cordless phones and other useless shyt. Protect yourselves people!!!

@ Starla, did you attend Illinois Weslyan University? Random and personal question, I know, but through you’re comments you just remind me so much of someone lol.

One of the reasons I didn’t comment when I saw the story here and elsewhere, was that I had a feeling about it. The story didn’t add up for me, but I held my keyboard until further proof came forth.

I’m sure this young woman didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to set herself on fire. Her family had to have known she was troubled and in need of professional help. I pray that she now receives the mental health attention that she needs. It’s sad…life is tough and you never know where someone’s breaking point is. I’m just glad I know Jesus and know that He carries me through my dark days.

I heard whispers of this a few days ago, I try not to internalize peoples craziness on account they share the same race as me.

great, now when some black woman really gets set a blaze/harmed/killed by racist, they will have to second guess her..

I hear you @apple, but the same way forensics solved this case, hopefully a camera will be shooting from somewhere.

I really hope she gets the help she needs.

With that being said, and i might step on a couple of toes here, would this case be considered racist if it turns out to be true? Because how many cases of white people (women especially) claiming that something was done to them by black people (black men especially)? And thoses cases, when the facts came out, enraged the black community? Will we denounce this just as vehemently?

To bad they are trying to shut down the mental health facilities within the state. Wow, she must have been going through something to not only lie but cause physical harm that drastic to herself…smh
