Founder of White People Meet: Don’t call me racist, ‘I dated a black woman once’
I just had an epiphany this morning. White people are the originators of FOMA. Every single time black people create something for themselves, their fear of missing out leads them to create counter movements, businesses, even hashtags — they just can’t stomach the fact that we have the audacity to do something without them. And that is the only explanation I have for Sam Russell launching the site, WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com. Because, do white people not meet everywhere already?
The thing is, Russell, 53, isn’t even really invested in trying to help white people meet other white people, he just wants “equal opportunity.” That’s why he and his wife — who are also trying to establish a pre-retirement business — created the site.
“The last thing in the world I am is racist,” he told The Washington Post. “I dated a black woman once. I helped raise a young black man … I just believe it’s hypocrisy to say ‘one group can do this, but another can’t.’”
Oh you mean the way banks have been shutting black people out of homes and businesses with discriminatory loan practices for years? Or how certain hairstyles unique to African-Americans keep us from being gainfully employed? You don’t think that’s hypocritical?
Nevertheless, The Grio reports the site, which Russell says is open to other races, has been online since August, but had its official launch — complete with a huge billboard — last week. So far there’s no word on how many people are actually checking for this (unnecessary) service.
I will say, I agree that Russell isn’t racist. He fits more in the ignorant bigot category. You know the place for people who fail to understand that e-harmony, match.com, Tinder and all of the other original dating sites and apps are exactly where white people meet and the only reason things like J Date and Black People Meet exist is because we can’t find each other on those other sites that claim to be universal? I wouldn’t expect someone fighting for equal opportunity for white people to understand that though.
