I’m sure not to many people recognize the name Leslie Sebastian Charles. Most would probably just assume it’s the name of some random female singer that has sunken into obscurity over the past couple of years. But think again. If you were an 80’s kid, more than likely you heard your mother dancing and singing to several of this artists songs. Whether he was singing about a “Caribbean Queen”, or providing the theme song to the movie “The Jewel of The Nile”, I’m sure at sometime in your life, you caught yourself singing a Billy Ocean song.
Up until yesterday, I hadn’t thought about the song in a long, that was until my 10 year old walked into my bedroom singing “Caribbean Queen”, and asked me about Billy Ocean. Yes, quite a random question from a 10 year old, but he is his mother’s son, so it’s expected. I asked him how did he learn about Billy Ocean, and of course he showed up in one of his favorite cartoons, Spongebob Square Pants! I’m just going to have to assume it had something to do with “Ocean” being Billy’s last name. So of course the kid headed to YouTube and looked up every Billy Ocean song he could possibly find.
As a kid I remember my mother playing Billy Ocean constantly. At one point I got tired of hearing him sing about this “Caribbean Queen”. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I came to appreciate his other songs, especially, “Suddenly”.
I used to think that love was just a fairy tale
Until that first hello until that first smile
But if I had to do it all again I wouldn’t change a thing
Cause this love is everlasting
I used to think that when I met “the one” that magically the music would start playing in the background, the two of use would run into each other’s arms & voila you’re in love. Those thoughts have definitely changed throughout the years. Who knows, maybe one day this song will end up on some dj’s play-list at my wedding. A chick can dream, right?
