Wild Wing Cafe Ejected African-American Customers When White Person Felt ‘Threatened’

Michael Brown says he was celebrating his cousin’s last day in Charleston last month at Wild Wing Cafe in North Charleston. He says after his party of 25 waited two hours for a table, the shift manager told them there was a “situation.”

“She said there’s a situation where one of our customers feels threatened by your party, so she asked us not to seat you in our section, which totally alarmed all of us because we’re sitting there peaceably for two hours,” explains Brown. “Obviously, if we were causing any conflict, we would have been ejected out of the place hours before.”

Brown says while he was talking to the shift manager, someone in his group began videotaping the conversation. Brown says that’s when the manager became upset and refused to seat them.

“I asked her I want to be clear with you,” says Brown. “I said so you’re telling me I have to leave. She said I have a right to deny you service. I said so you’re asking me to leave because you’re upset because he was recording you, after we’ve waited for two hours, and after you’ve already pretty much discriminated on us, and she answered yes.”

Brown says several calls were made to the corporate office in Mt. Pleasant, but he says they did not receive a call back, so he took to Facebook with this post Thursday.

I will never go to Wild wings cafe in N. Chs again! We (Party of 25 family and friends) waited 2hrs, patiently and were refused service because another customer (White) felt threatened by us. This type of racial discrimination is unacceptable and we have to put a STOP TO IT. The manager looked me dead in the face and said she was refusing us service because she had a right to and simply she felt like it. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT… PLEASE SHARE THIS POST… We need your help.

That caught the restaurant’s attention.

“We got alerted through social media, so we always encourage our customers to respond to us or to comment on our social media pages,” says Debra Stokes, the chief marketing officer for Wild Wing Cafe.

Representatives for Wild Wing Cafe say they immediately responded and spoke to Brown.

“We had a conversation,” says Stokes. “It was a really good conversation. He and many of his family and friends were there about a month ago, and they are regular customers of ours. So, they were having a going away party, and they just didn’t receive the experience that they have come to know and love.”

Brown says an apology was offered and a free meal for the entire group, but he says he’s not completely satisfied.

“We weren’t coming there for a free meal. When we came there that night, we were coming to patronize the business. This is not a situation where you can just give us a free meal and everything is ok because it’s deeper than that.”

I was born in Charleston SC, raised in Goose Creek SC and spent many of a time in N. Charleston let me say while I’m disgusted I’m not shocked by this. With that said blacks should not go to this establishment again, Wild Wing doesn’t deserve the money, that manager needs to be FIRED ASAP she allowed herself and the restaurant to be roped in by a blatantly racist customer. Or it was just business as usual there either way if the group was a threat they wouldn’t have sat there waiting for 2 freakin hours, cops would have been called if they were a true threat.

By all accounts it was just a church singing group with 25 people which is not unheard of if you worked in hospitality like I did back in the day. I’m used to 50-60 plus rolling up and you do your best to accommodate them, now if anybody got out of hand we would inform them this place aint that kind of party tone it down, this was not that case. It was a pathetic racist chump that saw 25 black folks and pulled that 1940-50s crap, they want to avoid blacks in any capacity but this isn’t back in the day so some of the tactics like banning blacks altogether is not what they can do anymore. So what’s next is the tried and true tested excuse “Those Coloreds are threatening me, give it a while before the customer is outed and then we’ll here how a black person did XYZ to them back in 1963 and they have been traumatized ever since. Meanwhile Wild Wings can BEAT IT.

anyone who says racism no longer exists is blind and refuses to acknowledge it. it seems like every day i’m reading or hearing about it and it sickens me. how a large group of non-disruptive black people is seen as threatening is beyond me.

and to think that a free meal will make everything ok, is insulting. you don’t just slap a quick fix band-aid on something like this.

Yeah, all the folks out there claiming a “post racial America” obviously doesn’t read news in print or online. It is rampant and it’s sickening b/c the more cases that keep popping up all over America, the more white people (and the Bobby Jindahls of the world) want to deny that racism exists at all. Or that somehow it’s our fault. So disgusted.

Bobby Jindahl will get his non white wake up call soon he must have forgot what Party he affiliates with, the ReThugs will remind him of were they view him.

And if Bobby Jindahl thinks that he could remotely win a Presidential race in 2016 he’s delusional

I love social media and all of its power. We no longer have big media as the gatekeeper of small stories like this one.

note that I meant to add parenthesis around small. However, there is no ability to edit comments anymore. Unfortunate.

Yeah, whatever happened to the ability to edit comments?!

I’ve never heard of this place. It’s that good that they’d wait two hours to be seated? Do they grow, kill, and prepare the food there?

    • August 26, 2013 - Reply

In general restaurants in Charleston take a long time to seat you if you don’t have reservations, especially if its the weekend.

I waited about an hour at another seafood restaurant for a party of 4 to be seated, and that was standard for the restaurants in the area.

Thank you for sprinkling some regional culture on me. I’m from the DMV and this is unheard of. I’ve been out in large groups before but have never waited that long then again I’m a stickler about making reservations anywhere/ everywhere I go so that could be a factor.

What do people do as they wait?

Wild Wings needs to feel threatened by a lawsuit!

Come on man why force your hater to take your money.

      • August 26, 2013 - Reply

@trueletterson, I said nothing about patronizing the place. I said the 25 people should sue Wild Wings. Those folks already tried to spend their money and were rebuffed. Personally, whenever I am in Charleston, I eat with family friends.

I think the two-hour wait was due to:
    1) The size of the party. The manager had to find a suitable space to accomodate that party.
2)The set-up was not pre-arranged. The staff at the restuarant was not notified at earlier time.

    • August 26, 2013 - Reply

To their credit, no one was complaining about the wait, itself…They were complaining about being ejected AFTER a 2hr wait on a lame, unproven ‘threat’.

How does this establishment believe that a free meal is appropriate compensation for “regular customers of ours”, who were racially discriminated against? This place does not care!

I do not know of any business that is in the business of making money turning away a party of 25 for one person, so the fact that the restaurant was willing to refuse a whole party of 25 service says a lot to me. When a wing place is turning you away you better know what time it is.

I think these instances are a clear sign being given to us to be more enterprising, spend our dollars with our own, and take this opportunity being thrown at us to build out our empires. It is actually a blessing in disguise. Every cloud has a silver lining.

    • August 26, 2013 - Reply

True, if you just cared about money, you would kick out that one person. 25 regulars over one, easy. Just shows you that racism is so deep that people are willing to hurt their profits over it.

I know that this would be counter productive and immoral, but part of my would love to drop kick the hell out of that lady. I’ll wait until she was done eating, right as she starts leaving, then drop kick her and the manager into a table.

Hmm … if I saw her getting messed up by a group of white people, I would love to watch and shout do they threaten you!

What really p!sses me off about all of this is that in typical corporate fashion, Wild Wings ignored this guy until his complaint went viral.

  9. August 26, 2013 - Reply

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, white women are a protected class. The idea that 25 people were humiliated because one ‘special snowflake’ felt threatened is nauseating. It reminds me of the horror pre-civil right stories of whole communities being burned/terrorized because ‘one’ white woman cried rape. Some things never change.

Yes- and this reality makes the number of black men singing their praises as a whole even more disheartening.

  10. August 26, 2013 - Reply

Please people do not make people who do not respect you take your money.

    • August 27, 2013 - Reply

Thank you! I have said this time after time! I will not support any establishment that does not want to serve me. Period.

I will not make you take my earned money, to receive bad service and do bad things to my food. That’s ridiculous.

I’m not saying people of color anymore, That term is too general for me. I’m saying black people, within the United States, of African descent. We’re hit with a harder punch than any other race, and we keep taking the jabs. We’re being ambushed, and black people continue to support these places with $$$. Keep that money in your pocket and save it for the next business who caters to and actually care about black people. Do your research on these companies, see what they’re all about.

We are creative and intelligent people! We have great minds; we must create our own businesses and we must cater to them.

As my mom says “this is what happens when a person thinks they OWN the restaurant/store as opposing to just working there…” I am glad that this family didn’t go quietly but made their voices heard because they weren’t wrong in any way shape or form. If the other customer was “threaten” by their presence (that person gets a huge b*tch please for me) they should have left! Again the best way to show black power/unity and utilize it is by hurting these establishments, people and places where it hurts the most…their pockets! It is time that we take back our dollar and invest it elsewhere…i.e. among ourselves.

And I LOVE the line “…This is not a situation where you can just give us a free meal and everything is ok because it’s deeper than that.” YESSSSS!!!! This is a deep issue and to compensation a meal is a slap in the face to that experience and trivializes it. They weren’t hurt because they couldn’t eat your food but hurt by how they were treated… you can’t compensate for that and fyi that manager should have been fired ASAP.

  12. August 26, 2013 - Reply

This restaurant must have been raking in the money to turn down twenty-five people over one woman’s request. I mean really so because the woman felt threating because of her own racist reason you turn down twenty-five then admit to it on camera. It seems like this place didn’t care about minorities from the beginning. If I was these people or any minority I wouldn’t go back there again.

    • August 26, 2013 - Reply

To be clear….I’m not condoning what happened. But it appears that it was the manager that refused them service; NOT the owner. Who in their right mind would refuse 25 peaceful READY TO SPEND $$$ customers. I would fire that manager so darn fast that she wouldn’t have time to know what happened.

  13. August 26, 2013 - Reply

Absolutely not okay. This place offering a free meal doesn’t cover the problem of their staff being racist. They need to fire the manager and they need to make a statement that rejects racism and segregation. And that white woman should be ashamed of herself, how fucking ridiculous to be afraid of people who aren’t causing a commotion to begin with. Grow the fuck up.

  14. August 26, 2013 - Reply

Not shocked, but still sad. Now, if I drive past this resturant and see blacks walking in, I’m going to inform them of this incident. And if they still try to go in, I’mma slap them!!! NEVER NEVER give our money to people who hate us. I’m sure there’s enough black owned chicken places in Charleston for us to eat at!

  15. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    A lawyers Christmas!

  16. August 26, 2013 - Reply

I wouldn’t spend 1/2 cent at this restaurant!! And those that patronize it after this incident have to be insane. Black people need to stop making other people wealthy that really don’t give a S about them. For example all the designer shoes, and cloths that some black people buy, and the designers are laughing all the way to the bank.

  17. August 26, 2013 - Reply

This is just another reason that more Black people should open/own establishments. We need to make a CONCERTED EFFORT TO SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESSES. Money is Power, and Power is Money!!

    • August 26, 2013 - Reply

In my experience, plenty of black mom-n-pop places take their black customers for granted and treat them rudely. I wish this weren’t the case, but I’ve noticed this for quite some time.

  18. August 26, 2013 - Reply

There are many, MANY places to eat in the Chuck (Charleston, SC). They would have done better in Church’s, Popeyes, Quncy’s, Golden Corral, even Cracker Barrel-Wild Wings isn’t nearly that good.

  19. August 26, 2013 - Reply

Oooooh I wish they would have identified the customer who “felt threatened” and put her on the video tape too. Silly woman.

  20. August 26, 2013 - Reply

I hope Black residents of charleston never patronize that place again.

  21. August 26, 2013 - Reply

Now watch Wild Wings hire rightwing lawn jockeys Alan West and Toure to smooth this over. Fuck all those people touting Post Racial America and Post Blackness.

      @Miss A

Stay away from the aptly titled Cracker Barrel too they have had their share of racial incidents, one involving Chris Rock’s mother Rose and his sister not to far back, don’t forget Dennys them fools stayed getting sued over racial discrimination.

Is anyone else tired of “afraid” white females. White females are the most protected females on this planet. I’ve seen black males risk life and limb for white females. What is up with white female fake fear and tears?
