We Could All Use Some Good News This Week: 17-Year-Old Graduates From College

Congratulations to James Martin, 17, from Miramar, Florida. While most teens his age just graduated from high school earlier this summer, Martin received a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) during a ceremony this week!

But wait. That’s not the half of it.

Martin finished with a 3.9 GPA and received Suma Cum Laude honors.

From WSVN-TV :

Martin was not always as studious as he is now. His mother was concerned about his early education due to a lack of focus in homeschooling. “His early years, he tended to be a little lazy,” said Joan Martin. “He daydreamed a lot and then, about 12 or 13, he started getting really serious.”

Yet, at just 14 years old, Martin enrolled at FAU. The graduate admitted, however, that the road to success was not easy. “It’s been some nights, man,” he said. “It’s been some nights where I’m just like, ‘Ugh!'”

Martin has not yet decided where he will attend graduate school. “In a couple years, hopefully, I’ll be on my way to getting a PhD, and so that would be a tremendous blessing,” he said. “In another eight years, I’ll be a professor somewhere.”

Martin said he hopes to come back to South Florida and teach at FAU or the University of Miami after he receives his PhD.

To the Martin Family, you did good! You did very good!

Every time I read about a kid like this, they are home schooled this says a lot(black kids thrive in home schooling or smaller class settings). I have no children, but If/when I do this encourages me to do more for their education.

On topic: Gwan bwoy, gwan! I am so happy and proud of you. 🙂
