Upset About The Lack Of Diversity Of Your Apple Emojis? There’s A Petition For That

brown emojis half

For some reason my 6 1/2 year old niece loves sending me the smoking turd Emoji.  No matter how many times I tell her to stop, she doesn’t seem to listen. But now, I’m wondering if she’s sending that Emoji because it’s pretty much the only brown one? Or maybe she’s just telling me I’m a shitty aunt on the sly? Either way, if you take a look at your Apple Emojis you’ll notice something interesting.  In the sea of 800 Emojis, the only two resembling people of color are a guy who looks vaguely Asian and another in a turban.

Thats_Racist_Transparent

Well maybe it isn’t racist, but just an oversight by Apple?

In any event, the people over at Do Something decided to start….wait for it…wait for it…A PETITION to get a more diverse line up of Emojis.

Here’s what their press release had to say:

If you look at Apple’s Emoji keyboard, what do you see? Two different camels. A smiling turd. EVERY PHASE OF THE MOON.

But of the more than 800 Emojis, the only two resembling people of color are a guy who looks vaguely Asian and another in a turban. There’s a white boy, girl, man, woman, elderly man, elderly woman, blonde boy, blonde girl and, we’re pretty sure, Princess Peach. But when it comes to faces outside of yellow smileys, there’s a staggering lack of minority representation.

Apple has been one of the biggest pioneers of Emojis, from offering them as full-color images to introducing them to the American market in the first place. And, the company has already taken steps to make Emojis more inclusive: iOS6 debuted same-sex couple Emojis. That’s why we’re asking Apple to take the lead again and diversify their Emoji typeface, recognizing people of color as people…and Emojis. Everyone deserves to feel visible and represented.

Apple’s new iOS7 is launching this fall, so let’s speak up and get this changed. Tell Apple to update their iOS7 Emoji keyboard to include at least four faces with some melanin: a man, a woman, a boy, and a girl.

For example, maybe something like this, with different sets of Emojis with varying skin tones (hopefully without the handlebar mustache):

We’ll deliver your signatures to Apple. Possibly on the backs of two different camels.

Give me colored Emojis or give me…nevermind I’m an Android user.

And there’s your petition of the week. Feel free to head over and sign ithttp://www.dosomething.org/petition/emojis.

Instead of a petition, why not solicit our Black community to develop a multi-ethnic emoji board and offer it to Apple for a price?
I so over petitions of this nature.
It’s no different from whining and complainiing without a solution.

      @AnnT

This!!! But lol at the little boy graphic. But I am not surprised again this is what happens when people are entitled because they think the default people are shades of white.

It’s something I’d definitely appreciate. But instead of the just those four, there should be an ethnic equivalent for every person emoji they have: including the family, couple, and baby ones.

Let the public make enough noise, and I believe Apple will get it done.
