Trigger Happy Florida Cops Shoot Unarmed Man In His Own Driveway

roy middleton

60 year old, Roy Middleton, of Escambia County, Florida is lucky to be alive. A neighbor called police at 2 a.m. because he suspected someone was stealing a car. When two deputies arrived and ordered Middleton to “get your hands where I can see them,” the Pensacola News Journal reports.

Middleton said he was bent over in the car searching the interior for a loose cigarette when he heard a voice order him to, “Get your hands where I can see them.”

He said he initially thought it was a neighbor joking with him, but when he turned his head he saw deputies standing halfway down his driveway.

He said he backed out of the vehicle with his hands raised, but when he turned to face the deputies, they immediately opened fire.

“It was like a firing squad,” he said. “Bullets were flying everywhere.”

A teenage girl was witness to the incident and said she never saw Middleton do anything to provoke the deputies.

“He wasn’t belligerent or anything,“ she said.

Middleton, too, said he doesn’t understand how or why the incident escalated so quickly. He also said deputies never offered him an explanation or an apology.

“Even if they thought the car was stolen, all they had to do was run the license plate,” he said. “They would have seen that that car belonged there.”

The unidentified deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.  In a response to the shooting, Sheriff David Morgan told press Monday afternoon the police officers reported the man “lunged out of a vehicle and spun toward them.” The gun shots shattered bones in Middleton’s left thigh, which “will require the insertion of a metal rod.”

If only Roy Middleton took Don Lemon’s advice. None of this would have never happened. I’m sure.

How many times is this going to happen? This is one of the many reasons I don’t care for cops.

What the eff if wrong with Florida cops? Was that self defense too?

I think in Florida that if you are a racist who is naturally afraid o black people you are allowed to shoot first and make excuses (that will get you acquitted) later.

What is wrong with Florida cops? Was that self defence too? Now a person can’t even be safe in their own drive way? WTF

@Cxx, sure they will claim self defense. They will say he turned around suddenly, and they will claim they saw something in his hand. Conservatives will talk about how brave the cops are and how they risk their lives everyday. If any cop has been shot anywhere in the general vicinity of Escambia County or Pensacola in the last five years, he or she will be mentioned constantly to work up sympathy for the police.

I’ve said it many times but if you are Black with any kind of means and are living in Florida you need to move the hell out of there ASAP. I feel like it is the Bermuda triangle of America, too much crazy mess goes on there, racially charged mess and just mess in general.

Wow! What IS it with Florida??!!!!!

I hope Mr. Middleton sues the pants off the police department. And those officers need to be FIRED.

@Mommiedearest, they need to lose their gun licenses and go to prison too.

This is so crazy, I am ashamed to be a Floridian, it seems like everyday something is going on related to race.

i’m sure he had no right to be in his own driveway……searching in his own car………after all it’s Florida….and even if the cops were not on paid leave……GZ supporters would raise funds for them……….(0C!< suckers……….

Yes, I wonder if the driveway called 9-1-1 and said it was scared. You know, can’t blame the driveway for being afraid of a scary black man holding the keys to his own car in front of his own home.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that we don’t make any uncomfortable.

I’m sure they will find some way to berate the teenage witness as well.

Mr. Middleton has a shot a winning because they did not manage to kill him. Since he can actually testify on his behalf, unlike Trayvon Martin, he can call the police on their BS. Their should also be some sort of dash cam that hopefully can support the victim.

I am formerly a proud Florida native, but it is time to boycott my home state.

These offiicers are not going to be charged with any sort of crime. Time and time again police have unloaded their weapons on unarmed black men and two things happen: either the police are charged and acquitted or they aren’t even charged at all.

    Dear Florida,

Please for the love of God secede. You’re f$%^ing embarrassing America and we got enough problems.

    Dear Mother Nature,

If you have the motherf^%er f all hurricanes (or any other natural disaster) that could take out an entire state in one fell swoop stashed away, I’mma need you to send that to Florida.

justrand0mth0ughtsinmyhead (And probably a lot more people who don’t want to verbally wish something like but, damn sure wouldn’t be upset if it happened)

Yes, because everyone in Florida deserves to be wiped out…smh. As a black Floridian I can admit that my state has many problems especially when it comes to race relations, but guess what so do many other states. All of is “boycott Florida”, “I wish Florida would secede” bull crap is really reaching…

Cops shoot an unarmed black person in Florida and got a vacation for it.

The fact that the police made no apology or said nothing to the man says tons about their attitude. Liability or not, if I were a cop, and I shot an innocent citizen in his own car, in his own driveway, I would apologize, even if it were used against me in court.

I’m thoroughly convinced that Florida is not a safe place to be Black.
I did some volunteer work in FL a few years ago. One night, I was asked to pull over in a traffic check and was interrogated for nearly an hour about my out of state license plates. I kept explaining that I didn’t live there, but was visiting for a few months. They kept grilling me and hovering over my car all swole up like they were ready to jump, and one cop had a flashlight in my pupil and one hand on his gun. The other cop kept asking “what do you think I should do?” I had no idea what that meant, but I just lost composure and started crying. They went back to their squad car and one of the officers turned around and said “you better thank God we’re letting you go.”

I left Florida that weekend and haven’t been back since. Even the sight of Mickey leaves a bad feeling in my gut.

That is scary. And disturbing. I’m so angry that happened to you. Thank goodness you got through that incident relatively unharmed.

To be honest, nowhere in Amerikkka is safe for a black person.

Florida is neck and neck with Texas on my wishlist of states that would secede.

I doubt a 60 year old man lunged out of anything or did any spinning towards anyone.

@B, what you said is way too much like common sense! Remember, conservatives talked about a 159 lb. teenager as if he had the strength of an all pro linebacker. I’m sure the cops and their supporters will say that Mr. Middleton is extremely strong and quick for a man his age.

Did anyone read the comments that are on the Pensacola website. Amazingly there are a lot of (white) people who are ascertaining that this wouldn’t have happened had he been white. Huh, I wonder if some of white America is waking up?

    • July 30, 2013 - Reply

Lol clearly this was a joke.

I read the comments in the local paper, and it seems that a whole lot of people, white and black, have a low opinion of the sheriff’s department.

Hopefully, local people will put pressure on the system to fire the cops and give Middleton some justice. My guess is that if the issue goes national, support will break down along racial lines.

Exactly! I’m so sick of hearing that we’re so post racial because it’s 2013. Obviously not instances like this goes to show you that we have a long way to go. I hope he sues for a hefty sum.

Come on everyone, we black people are mythical creatures. We have 3 heads and 4 arms, so having arms above your head isn’t enough to show you have surrendered and are unarmed.

This sad. This black man can’t even go in his own car at his own house in peace at night. I pray this man sue the police department and get paid. Some white neighbor called the police because of suspicion. It is sad that a black man cannot walk the streets in peace, go in his car on his property in peace that he owns, go in a store in peace minding his own business and not bothering anybody without somebody white think in their ignorant mind that all blacks are criminals.
