Time’s 100 Influential List Includes Laverne Cox, Misty Copeland, Audra McDonald & Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Time released its annual 100 Influential List and it includes some amazing black women that are paving the way for others. Mellody Hobson received the title of Titan for her financial wizardry and efforts to educate black people on financial literacy. Hobson, who is also married to George Lucas, is the president of Chicago’s Ariel Investments and doesn’t bit her tongue when it comes to being ‘undeniably black’.

Earlier this month, Misty Copeland made history as the first black woman to dance “Swan Lake” and is paving the way for little girls everywhere and it’s fitting that Time referred to her as a Pioneer.  Educational activist Kira Orange Jones wants to change education in New Orleans, and as a member of the Board of Education she’s doing just that. Jones is also Teach for America’s executive director in New Orleans.

Do we even have to say how amazing Laverne Cox is? From starring on Orange is the New Black, to being an advocate for transgender people, Cox is giving people a voice who didn’t always have one.

Who run The Tonys? Audra McDonald of course. McDonald is the winningest Tony Award winner ever, and secured the honor after elegantly paying homage to Billie Holliday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.

Do we even have to say anything about Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie besides, ‘bow down’? The literary greatness that is Adichie tells a story like no other. Her two books Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah simply works of art.

And last but not least, Obiageli Ezekwesili. You may  not be familiar with her name, but a year ago this week, Ezekwesili sparked a movement that is still being heard across the world #BringBackOurGirls was the work of Nigeria’s former Minister of Education. A year later, after over 200 Nigerian school girls were abducted by Boko Haram, she’s still doing her part in raising awareness and making sure they get home.

All of the people on the list certainly have stirred up either love, hate, debate, or interest. It’s a very interesting and diverse list.

He may have lost his way a bit but Kanye West is an incredibly accomplished man for his age and means.
