Savannah State University Student Dies in Campus Shooting

A Savannah State University student was shot to death during an altercation with another student Thursday night.

Christopher Starks, a junior from the greater Atlanta area, was shot in the student union. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died, according to a statement issued by the university.

There had been “an altercation at the SSU Student Union building Thursday evening,” the statement said. He was the “only individual transported to a medical facility following the incident.”

The campus was put on lockdown, which was lifted at midnight, according to The Tiger’s Roar, the student newspaper. The report also said that “blood was found on the floor in the Student Union and police were all over campus.”

So far, no arrests have been made. The school also said that because the university is a state institution, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is handling the ongoing investigation with assistance from the SSU Police Department.

Classes on Friday have been delayed until 10 a.m. and grief counselors will be available on campus, according to the statement.

We have a serious problem with some people who can’t respect human dignity. Certainty, there is evil in our globe. The death of Christopher Starks is a tragedy and his death has no justification at all. Mississippi State University is going through a lot. This is very early in the investigation, so more information will come out about what happened and who was responsible for Starks’ death ultimately. I read that they arrested a person Fhu-Qui Cong ‘Bill’ Nguyen, who made threats against the school. I send prayers and condolences to the family and friends of Christopher Starks.

    RIP Brother Christopher Starks.
