Right Wing Site ‘Outs’ Writer Shaun King As White, But Is he?

Every since the Black Lives Matter movement crossed over to the mainstream, Right Wing media has been chomping at the bit to discredit it. From doubting claims of police brutality to outright attacking victims, sites like The Blaze, the Daily Caller, and Breitbart have been trying their hardest to bring it down. Wednesday, they found a new target: Daily Kos writer Shaun King.

In the past year, King has been one of  the leading conduits of information about victims of police violence. His tweets regularly rack up thousands of shares, and his follower count has ballooned to nearly 170,000. For many, King is a necessary source of information that the mainstream media fails to cover, and for others, apparently, he’s a threat that needs to be dealt with.

Wednesday, Conservative sites seemed adamant to bring him down, questioning whether or not he’s been lying about his race.

Breitbart News, the same website that smeared for USDA official Shirley Sherrod, ran a story questioning King’s racial identity.

An investigative blogger has accused Shaun King, a key figure in the Black Lives Matter movement, of misleading media icon Oprah Winfrey by pretending to be biracial in order to qualify for an “Oprah scholarship” to historically black Morehouse College. The blogger says King is white and has been lying about his ethnicity for years. King is a high-profile campaigner against “police brutality” and “justice correspondent” for the liberal Daily Kos website who told Rebel magazine in 2012 that he was biracial, with the magazine reporting that he is the “son of a Caucasian mother and an African-American father.” He has also described himself as “mixed with a black family” on Twitter. King has been lionised by the press, praised as hero of civil rights and social activism. He has written extensively about a childhood in which he was terrorised by “decades old racial tensions.” He claims to have been “the focus of constant abuse of the resident rednecks of my school. Yet, in recent weeks, rumours have been circulating about his ethnicity. A 1995 police incident report lists Shaun King’s ethnicity as white.

Breitbart News listed a police report of a 1995 incident in which King was beaten by a group of boys at his high school as proof that he’s white. Apparently, the officer marked the box listing white as his race, but considering King is pale-skinned, it’s possible the officer just checked the box he thought described King best. After he became a top trending topic on Twitter, King took to the social network to refute Breitbart News’ claims in a string of more than 30 tweets.

The reaction on Twitter to King’s tweets were mixed. Some compared him to Rachel Dolezal, others wondered why he didn’t just outright say he was biracial, and another group questioned how anyone could believe Breitbart’s account given their history.

And then there was this…

Despite King’s complicated racial history he said this latest attempt to silence him won’t stop him from reporting on police violence.

Mixed….yea. Not black. Not kendrick lamar black or even Gina black but partially black. More “other” than black. If a cop had to pick between him with a hoodie on or wesley snipes with a hoodie on Im pretty sure they’d be more intimidated by weasly.

First, they tell us Rachel Dolezal can be black if she wants to be (while being as white as you please), and now they’re telling us Shaun King can’t possibly be black or even mixed-race. White folks policing blackness is the one constant in America. Good to know some things never change.

People know about the viciousness of right wing organs like Breitbart, the Blaze, etc. These organs don’t want the real truth about police terrorism known or about how the system of white supremacy is evil. Their goal is to pacify people in order to submit to their agenda. They have made it their duty to slander the BLM in any way possible. The Department of Homeland Security has monitored the BLM. The truth is important here. Regardless of the truth of Shaun King’s ethnicity, this situation will not deter us. Our eyes are on the prize. That prize is justice for black people and liberation.

Yup, and also the NYPD and MTA admitted that they secretly monitor BLM protests as part of “counterterrorist surveillance activity”. Black people peacefully advocating for our rights as American citizens are terrorists. Meanwhile caucasians can put on camo gear, walk around with military weapons the cops don’t even have and call themselves ‘oath keepers’, and we know they are not considered a threat by the federal government.

Anyway re: Shaun King, the irony about this foolishness is these nutjobs went looking for dirt on him, and the worst they came up with is he MIGHT be white–kinda funny in a sick way. I love his #33 tweet in response. Racists should spend all that time and energy wondering why their genes are defective.

Great Words Sister. These racists extremists do what they do best (and that is to use hate and distractions). The NYPD and MTA secretly monitoring BLM protests shows that we will continue to fight for our civil liberties. There are fusion centers nationwide where DHS, etc. monitor activists unjustly. I’m glad that you have bring up the double standards. White folks like Oath Keepers and allies of Bundy can go out in public with automatic weapons when black people who are protesting peacefully are treated as “terrorists” by governing authorities. That is a disgrace. The actions of the establishment are very similar to how the FBI, etc. illegally monitored activists of the old school civil rights movement too.

These racists always believe in the myth that they are intellectual superiority, but they believe in the most ignorant, retrograde, and stupid views on economics, sociology, and on policing matters. The haters from Beibart will never stop black people from expressing their right to fight for right.

“very similar to how the FBI, etc. illegally monitored activists of the old school civil rights movement too decades ago.”

Exactly. One of the BLM activists mentioned that the NYPD is taking photos of people who show up for their rallies, someone confirmed that his own photo was taken and placed in a file somewhere. Unbelievable, meanwhile my tax dollars are still supporting 24/7 security for Eric Garner’s murderer.

And since you mention the tactics whites used during the civil rights movement, I would add that we need to be careful about who is allowed in our circles when it comes to strategizing. There are still negroes who can be bought for a few pennies, and will infiltrate one of these organizations in a heartbeat.

I agree with you totally Sister. It is wrong for our taxpayer dollars to be used for the NYPD to harass innocent BLM activists who just want a real, revolutionary change in society. The murderer of Eric Garner is living his life and he is not even in prison for the rest of his life. Eric Garner’s family is strong and they are right to mention that this is not justice. It is not justice to witness a phalanx of NYPD officers illegally violating the civil liberties of NYC residents. It is not justice to witness a murderer not held accountable for choking to death an unarmed, black man (also the medical people in the scene of Eric Garner’s murder are guilty of negligence too). Many black women have died as a product of murder and we know about the great Say Her Name campaign (which is bring awareness on the lives of black women).

We should be careful of sellout negroes who work as a means to infiltrate real movements of liberation. One sellout was O’Neal, who worked with the FBI to infiltrate the Black Panthers of Chicago. The CPD, the FBI, etc. was involved in the murder of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark in December of 1969. Fred Hampton was ahead of his time by creating gang truces, setting up real programs that helped the community, and opposing police brutality all before he was 25 years old. Another sellout was Gene Roberts. Gene Roberts was an agent and he was Malcolm X’s bodyguard. Gene Roberts had links to the NYPD. We know that the FBI and the CIA illegally monitored Malcolm X worldwide.

        @Mary Burrell

It is very similar indeed. Some people don’t know that the establishment called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. an “agitator” and a person who provoked violence when he advanced nonviolent protests in America. Many people from the SNCC, the SCLC, etc. were victims of illegal monitoring by the FBI and other entities. COINTELPRO from the FBI was used to oppress activists like the Black Panthers. The truth is that we will continue to stand up for our human rights as black people.

I don’t know what this guy is, I don’t even know much about him other than every time I see his twitter posts being reblogged on tumblr I go back and forth from thinking he looks white to he looks like T.I.’s long lost brother.

I mean his youth photo looks kinda John B-ish black?

Either way even if he isnt black this is nothing like whats her face.

Yes, right wing nuts are busy. However, there is also a claim that on birth certificate both parents are listed as white and his bio father was identified. So it’s a little more than just a police report. His answers were odd to me. Either you have a Black daddy or you don’t. All that double speak is suspect.
I see this no different than Rachel IF TRUE.
I will never be cool with white people occupying Black spaces and exploiting the one drop rule for personal gain.

That’s a good point. The two or three times people had the nerve to question my race, I didn’t go into all that song and dance. I just stated I was “f****n black” and that was that. I will wait until more of this story develops before I say anything. But I’m with you about not liking white people occupying and exploiting black spaces.

yes, or even of Latino descent, but not 100 % white, they r truly reaching, the media is just trying to stir up trouble where there is none, to try to distract the focus of the BLM movement.

You’re absolutely right, and they do this to divert attention away from the real reason for the BLM…Police brutality and the slaughter of Black men, women, and children.

The allegations are very serious because, if true, they would expose just how easy it is for whites to infiltrate black organizations and rise to leadership positions.

Well if its any consolation I only know him from his tweets with good data/info re police brutality etc and I just assumed he was white anyway
There is nothing wrong with having white allies but they don’t need to pretend to be black to do so
Also the father listed on your birth certificate doesn’t have to be your bio dad
Early days yet ..I will wait and see

This whole thing reminds me of the movie “Soul Man” back in the 80s. If King is a fraud, then he needs to own up to it before all hell breaks loose. He’s losing credibility by the minute.

  15. August 20, 2015 - Reply

He looks black too me. The cretins who want to attack the BLM are trying to use this tactic to distract and create confusion because the movement is gaining traction.

Every since? Really? I stopped reading after that. You can’t be a credible writer if you use the wrong word altogether. Confusing ‘then and than’ or ‘your and you’re’ is bad enough… but EVER SINCE I read the first line my skin has been crawling.
