Pregnant Woman and Her Family Killed En Route to Her Baby Shower

Zarissa Ayres

A pregnant woman was killed on the way to her baby shower when a tractor trailer crashed into her car killing her and four other family members. The woman, identified as Zarissa Ayres, was traveling from Virginia to Maryland when her Suzuki Forenza was hit by a tractor trailer near an intersection, WMAR reported.

Four of the five were members of one family, and the fifth was the boyfriend of one of the pregnant women killed.

Killed in the crash were Zarissa M. Ayres, 30, of Greenbush and her unborn child; her sister, Regina M. Ayres, 24, of Greenbush; Regina’s boyfriend, Travis M. Stratton, 25, of Onancock; their 2-month-old son Jonathan Ayres; and Regina’s daughter, Jordan Ayres, 7, according to police.

According to a announcement posted on Zarissa Ayres’s Facebook page, her baby shower was scheduled to be held that afternoon in Baltimore.

The driver of the tractor trailer was identified as Yvenet Mayette, 28, of Delaware. He was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash. The cause is under investigation. No charges were filed.

That is the sort of thing from which a parent never really recovers, he or she just learns how to live with that tragedy always in the background.

I literally just cried reading this. Life is entirely too complicated and complex to even begin to understand how so many people could be wiped out in an instant. A 2-month and 7 year old, a pregnant woman and her unborn child, her sister and her sister’s boyfriend in route to her baby shower. No….I don’t understand. This is painful.

I can’t imagine the grief this family must be going through. Please be careful on the roads and highways, especially around tractor trailers. I have had too many close calls sharing the road with them.
