Open Thread: Is The Media Biased Against Interracial Couples?

861764_black_n_white

Remember that promise Kanye West made a few months ago about being quiet and not having one of his classic rants? Well, it’s been broken. Who would have thunk it?

Over the weekend during his Yeezus tour, Kanye gave the crowd something to ponder when it comes to interracial couples and the media:

“This ain’t no motherf*cking spoof, so play this sh*t back at your motherf*cking meetings when you’re writing your jokes. Play this sh*t back when you’re writing your headlines for your tabloids… Write that motherf*cking headline when you try to make me look like a maniac or an animal, because you afraid of interracial relationships, because you afraid of the future, because you afraid of a rapper that was raised by two educated parents.”

So apparently, Kanye feels that the evil tabloids and media are afraid of interracial relationships. Because you know, he’s the first person to ever be in one.

But let’s discuss that. The big bad media and tabloids, who Kanye alleges are ‘afraid’. The thing is, the media loved Khloe and Lamar. The media loves Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez. The media almost died when Heidi Klum and Seal got divorced.  No one pays attention to the fact that several other famous people are in interracial relationships.

But you know, Kanye’s relationship is special (sarcasm).

Maybe Kanye should take a second to ponder that it’s not his relationship that the media are afraid of, or hates. Maybe it’s just him.  Sure there are those people who frown upon interracial couples, and feel that the races should stay separate. But there’s also those people who don’t give a damn.  Then there’s those people who are tired of over-saturation and Kim Kardashian’s face. And Kanye’s rants.  Maybe, just maybe,  it’s Kanye who has an issue with his own interracial relationship and he’s just projecting.

Clutchettes, what do you think about Kanye’s newest rant? Do you think the media is afraid of interracial relationships?

    He’s right though. Black women and white men interracial relationships are treated differently than black male white female relationships so I don’t think you can compare the two. Although I do think the author of this post is correct too in that the media has a hostile relationship with Mr. West along with his fiance. Kanye speaks his mind so he’s a threat, on top of that he’s in an interracial relationship with a notoriously fame-whoring woman, so it’s a double whammy.

    Kanye’s rants are basically anxiety attacks. Kanye cannot understand why he and Kim are not THE couple. Kanye wants his lifestyle to be a brand but he seriously miscalculated getting with her. He wanted a girlfriend with a high profile but mistook Kardashian reality stardom for Hollywood hotness. He cannot understand why no one takes him and Kim seriously: as artists, as style setters, as “beautiful” people.

    The media LOVES interracial relationships especially BM/other women. The Cheerios commercial got mad love. The media fell all over themselves when they got wind of that BM doing his biracial children’s hair. Most every blog or so carried the story. They don’t hesitate to pair a BM with an “other” woman every chance they get.

    It’s definitely Kanye and Kim’s behinds they don’t like.

    Kanye, please. Kanye is an incredible talent who has this incredible desire to be seen as an “enemy of the state.” And he does this in spite of the fact that that he continues to “win” every time he releases new music.

    At the end of the day, Kanye is just a middle class kid from the midwest who wanted to rap. I think he’s chosen to date women who are out of his league (see: Amber Rose, Kim K.), because I think he calls himself ‘proving’ something to the world and going against the grain. Yes, the public is always talking about these two, but at the end of the day, I don’t think anyone really cares about them as much as he thinks they do.

      @Nati

      How are those women out of his league? Sorry, but they are significantly beneath him. I think that’s his #1 problem, and he’s been messing up big time. Everything else he said rings true.

      Like with Lady Gaga, I think Kanye West has this belief that he is making music for the “others”: the down-trodden, the enlightened and the meek.
      But their music is primarily consumed by the majority, the popular and the like.

      @Daisy

      Which is why Naati had stated that they are “out of his league”. It doesn’t matter if these women are from affluent backgrounds or as you say “beneath him”, they are still out of his league.

    No the media isn’t afraid of interracial relationships Hitch, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Robert DeNiro, Taye Diggs, Michael Ealy, Ellen Pompeo, Wanda Sykes and the list goes on. I think people have a problem with Kanye and Kim. They are so desperate for attention and honor, they are attention whores and overexposed. The backlash against Kanye isn’t related to his relationship. Honestly, most of the time he refers to his interracial relationship I am confused because I forget that Kim is not black. I found his comments about being the son of two educated parents to be more provocative and that feels like it rings true. I do think he scares people because that means educated black people can be angry at society and prone to fits of rage in the same way uneducated black people are.

    The media is biased against miss Kimberly Kardashian because despite her parlaying it into clothing, tv etc companies no one will ever forget or seemingly forgive how she got put on….on her back

    The media is also biased against against seemingly a few sandwiches short of a full picnic basket Kanye who rants and raves constantly and somehow still manages to be arrogant and realize nothing is wrong with him…. majority of his rants all leaning towards the point of incomprehension

    The media is NOT biased against interracial celebrity couples …it about broke their hearts as stated when seal and Heidi split

    Three words Kanye:

    Get over yourself.

    Oh the cost of marrying a hoe. . . he has to face the backlash of that.

    Also, he’s talented enough, but not so brilliant where I’m losing my mind over his work. I love some of his work, but consider it party music more than anything else.

    I think that’s his problem. He’s overrating his talent. He’s a musician, making music that makes people move, he’s just trying too hard to be all deep and artistic and that’s not really who he is.

    Kanye is not some new aged Jimi Hendrix or something. He’s a middle class Black kid who grew into a popular rapper. A huge feat, but he wants to be like Jean Michel Basquiat, an eccentric Black creative, but let’s get real, he’s a middle class Black kid who didn’t grow up will all the experiences that made Basquiat become who he did.

    Hence all the tortured artist act.

    Come on, you can’t knock up the porn star of the century and then claim victim.

    Seriously, get over yourself Kanye.

      So, basically this is all Kim’s fault?

    Actually I think the media is more baised against couples that contain two minorites members of the same group. Especially black people or black love as they say. kanye West is stupid the media would cover his relationship more than they would if he was with a black girl especially one of darker skin.

      @geenababe

      I totally agree, they seem not to take a liking to two Black People in love. They’d rather show interracial over (again) TWO BLACK FOLKS IN LOVE.
