A man was charged with murder Monday in the death of Edena Hines, actor Morgan Freeman’s step-granddaughter.

Hines, 33, was found lying in the street in front of her apartment on West 162nd Street in Manhattan at about 3 a.m. on Sunday. She had multiple stab wounds to the chest and was later pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital.

Lamar Davenport, 30, who is believed to have been in a relationship with Hines, was taken into custody at the scene and charged in the early hours of Monday, the NYPD said. The department earlier said he was undergoing a psychological evaluation at a hospital.

“The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer,” Freeman said in a statement issued to USA TODAY by his rep, Stan Rosenfield. “Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”

Hines, who according to her website studied acting at New York University, is the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife.

Our deepest condolences to the Freeman family and friends.

It’s a shame. E’Dena Hines was a shining light, who wanted to show her gifts of acting and social activism to the world (in helping those of the human family). Her glorious, inspirational life was cut short by the actions of a murderer. Her death was extremely brutal and vicious. No words can describe the unimaginable pain of losing the life of a young, down to Earth, and talented woman. I send prayers and condolences to the friends and the family of E’Dena Hines. Her life is gone physically, but her unfortunate passing will never prevent people from reaching their goals. So, we know about this terrible, melancholy story as a way for us to continue in the work that E’Dena Hines has done for others. We are always reminded that love, compassion, and dignity should always be in our minds and in our hearts as human beings.

    RIP Sister E’Dena Hines.
