Mindy Kaling’s Brother Is An Affirmative-Action Troll

kaling brother twitter

Mindy Kaling’s brother, Vijay Chokalingam, has proven to be one of the biggest trolls this year. Vijay thought he’d set out to prove that Affirmative Action was wrong, by applying to medical schools as a Black man and he plans to release a book about his experiences. Vijay’s book, Almost Black, will describe how he masqueraded as a Black man between 1998 and 1999.

From Telegraph:

Chokalingam was motivated to commit the fraud by the fact that he had a relatively low Grade Point Average of 3.1. Suspecting that certain US universities were employing affirmative action and positively discriminating in favour of candidates with an African-American background, he decided to “test” his theory by rebranding himself as a Black man.

As well as shaving his head and trimming his lashes, Chokalingam also applied to colleges using his middle name, Jojo (his parents were inspired by the African-American basketball player Jo Jo White) and emphasised the fact that he had spent time in Nigeria as a child in interviews.

According to his website, as a “Black” candidate with a 3.1 GPA, Chokalingam was considered by medical schools including Harvard, Pennsylvania and Columbia, and was eventually accepted by St Louis University in Missouri. He later dropped out, after changing his mind about pursuing a career in medicine, and now works (in a somewhat ironic twist) as a resume writer and graduate school application consultant. He has made it clear that he lied only about his race: all other details on his application were correct.

Now here’s where his experiment failed.

Out of the top-tier schools he applied to, guess how many he got into – NONE.

Vijay did get accepted into the lesser tiered St. Louis University. But in no way can he prove it was because of Affirmative Action.

Vijay says his issue with Affirmative Action, is the racism behind it.

“My experiences applying to medical school as a Black man impressed on me the injustice created by the system of legalised racism called affirmative action,” he stated on his website.

“This system destroys the dreams of millions of Indian-American, Asian American, and white applicants for employment and higher education. It also creates negative stereotypes about the academic abilities and professional skills of African-American and Hispanic professionals, who don’t need special assistance in order to compete with other minority groups.”

I’m not sure if Vijay realizes that Black people aren’t the only ones who benefit from Affirmative Action. He needs to take his Bobby Jindal-self somewhere and have a seat at a university.

After all of this ‘work’, guess who failed to complete medical school? You guessed it.

Vijay, you’re a disgrace to your family.

1998? How old is he? Another dumb, racially paranoid Indian just like that evil fraud Gandhi. Dude is more mediocre than every single Black guy I ever went to school with and he’s still blaming AA for losing in life. I would be angry too lol. Why are these idiots so obsessed with Black folk, anyhow? Loser.

I see your point, but I would not call Ghandi a fraud. He was a Brahman born in the mid nineteenth century, and his racial attitudes were pretty typical for his times. Heck, most progressives of that era were racist by contemporary standards. Regardless of how he saw African people, his techniques of non-violent resistance have been a valuable tool for many people over the last 120 years since he first pioneered them in South Africa.

Anthony, Ghandi was a hateful bigot. That runs counter to the philosophy he was selling. I believe that makes him a fraud.

I disagree with your point, not that Ghandi was a bigot, but that he was a fraud. You see it differently, and I accept your different point of view.

@TeflonD: I saw something Ina me message board about Ghandi.and I guess I need to do my research on him. I saw the movie, and always thought he was a hero. That was naive of me.

Many historians have written books and articles on Ghandi. Maybe people should read them instead of trusting what they read on message boards. Why would anybody trust a person they don’t know making vague accusations without citing any specific facts or identifying their sources ?

Hindu culture, of which Ghandi was a part was not an egalitarian or color neutral culture. That is why I am not shocked that he was not sympathetic to Africans. My attitude is that regardless of Mohandas Ghandi’s personal failings, his ideology has been very useful for people of color all over the world. History is full of great people with terrible flaws.

this dude is such a scumbag. this is no different than somebody stealing food from the homeless & then complaining about there being too many soup kitchens. only a jerk would pull this kinda stunt & think it actually makes a point to get rid of affirmative action. if that scumbag has a problem w/how admissions works then what he needs to be doing is advocating FOR more resources to go to k-12 schools in minority areas. as a matter of fact, if he really wanted to prove affirmative action doesn’t work, what he should’ve done was send his kids to public school in minority areas to prove that it’s possible to come out at or above academic excellence regardless of where you go to school. but we all know he would NEVER subject his kids to being educated in a black school b/c the fact is that black students are systematically denied access to proper education, which leaves them at a huge disadvantage by the time they graduate hs & aa is just a pitiful attempt to “make up” for that for the kids who are really willing to bust their butts despite the odds. so instead of actually advocating for a change to the system that would set everybody on a level playing field, he chose to take the douche’s way out & take the place of a black student that has far fewer opportunities than he does & then turn around & act all self-righteous about it like he just solved some math problem that no one else was able to crack. he’s an entitled scumbag & anyone who thinks what he did was justified is a scumbag too. he’s mad b/c he had to manipulate the system & take from the less fortunate just so he could have an advantage over other people & now he wants aa to be eliminated so other scumbags don’t have to work as hard to increase the gap b/t them & the folks who have been failed by the system. heaven forbid a douche ever have to compete w/someone that’s been stepped on their entire life & be beat out.

Considering that his sister has made a career out of lusting for white men, it is no surprise that her brother has race issues too. To my mind they are a couple of dark skinned South Asians who try to prove their whiteness by attacking black people. He is another D’nesh DaSouza or Bobby Jindal.

She is enough of a mainstream liberal to not want to be involved in obvious race-baiting. She also has enough talent to openly denigrate other people, she can tell jokes about herself.

“Considering that his sister has made a career out of lusting for white men”. Why do ppl always say this about her? Is it because of her character dating white guys on her show? I mean, compared to other celebs, we really (or rather I) don’t know much about her personal life. I love Mindy and her unapologetic attitude towards mainstream size and beauty standards. She’s so chirpy! lol…

I believe you are failing to consider that many of those Caucasian “non-whites” consider themselves to be white. Years ago,I did apartment property management for a college acquaintance who was half Iraqi & had taken over the company business. He specifically put my 25 yr old, blonde haired, blue-eyed ass into a sketchy building to send the message that if I felt safe enough to live there, it must be OK. Actually, only sketchiness was way too many children playing loudly in the courtyard all the time. Far more than the representative percent of the local area were brown. After I moved in and it wasn’t enough, he told me he was going to try to rent the next couple apartment openings to white people, within the limits of the law, so the building would have a population makeup closer to the local area (very well integrated area, I’d call it half white and half black).
He rented a couple apartments, and I went back to him to ask why he hadn’t followed the plan he’d discussed. He didn’t understand. He’d rented one to someone from the Indian sub-continent, and another from Egypt. They were both Caucasian. They’re ethnicities just prevented them from being white in the standard view. HORRIBLE trying to explain it to him. Perhaps Mindy, too, focuses on Caucasian rather than ethnicity, keeping her out of the WASPy entitled cliques while being just as Caucasian as all those politicians from Skull & Bones.

The things she says in and out of her show has me convinced she must be a low key Republican. One of my favorites is the lone black woman on the show is a stereotype and when addressed about it she said it wasn’t her responsibility. Theres a difference in being unapologetic for what you want for yourself whether that be white men or how you want your show but not at the expense of others.

    What he did was
low and disrespectful. He obviously doesn’t know what affirmative action.
Affirmative action is not a purely quota system. Affirmative action is about
giving qualified minorities opportunities to go into college or to have a job.
His action is about lying, cheating, and using deception as a way for him to
advance some radically conservative political agenda. He is a total disgrace.
Mindy Kaling’s brother needs to wake up. You will notice that this male won’t
use ways to actually change the system for the better like addressing economic
inequality, advocating smaller class sizes, promoting mentorships, and
addressing socioeconomic problems in communities nationwide. He is not going
into the black community to help the black community. He is just hypocritically
using the racist tactic of calling himself black (when that is not true) while
hypocritically condemning affirmative action as “racist.” People know that
education is different for the poor and for the super-rich. The poor readily receive
lax educational services while the rich receive state of the art technology and
other modernized resources. There is no way to end racism and discrimination
unless there are policies to address discrimination. We know that many
affirmative action programs have helped minorities and women for decades (in
spite of states recently banning affirmative action involving college
recruitment). We know that the playing field is far from level. That male is
hypocritical to refuse to expose white affirmative action from legacies,
restrictive custodies, record bailouts, and other forms of white privilege.
What he has done is to strip opportunities from others as a way to exploit
himself (in the midst of his own privilege). What he has done was cruel and
    evil.

Now that’s what I call pukeworthy prose coming from Mindy’s brother. WTF, this child of privilege grew up the son of a medical doctor mother and thinks this way about his dreams being crushed? I’d like this guy to try posing as the son of a single mother waitress who never finished high school and see what that’s like. And by the way, Indian-Americans ARE Asian Americans. Guess Vijay/Jojo has internalized the dumb idea among some people of Korean/Chinese/Japanese background that they are the only true Asian-Americans. India is in Asia; FFS the Buddhist religion was established there first and spread to the rest of the continent.

Well I like Mindy. This has nothing to do with her, it’s her brother who wrote the book. Unless she wrote the forward or is on his book tour or tweeted support of the book, I think it’s unfair to put her in the conversation. Regarding her sadly mistaken brother, I say, unless you come from the very people who built the economical and business structure of this country pro bono, you gets no say on Affirmative Action. And while I’m no expert, I believe the UK has also put some measures in place to say “oops, our bad” to all those who have suffered at the hands of their colonialism. Hate to be prejudice, but I’m REALLY confident other people descended from his ancestral home are getting those benefits.

It all comes back to the fact that ALL non-Black people are promised that if they comply with the inhumane racial hierarchy and don’t challenge anti-blackness, then THEY won’t be the ones relegated to bottom of the racial hierarchy. I have no problem at all coalescing with other people of color, but most of them need to address their anti-blackness.They need to take IMMEDIATE concrete and transparent steps to address it within themselves AND the communities they come from. Period. They ALSO need to understand the racial hierarchy – which is really a hierarchy of human worth and human dignnity – that places white people on top, black people on the bottom as the “opposite race”, and themselves somewhere in the middle.

Anti-blackness is toxic, and I really refuse to blithely be subjected to it from ANYONE, including other people of color. It’s the worst when it comes from whites because they have the social, political, and economic privilege and power to implement their racist anti-blackness as a racist governing structure. But anti-blackness can also cause major psychological and emotional distress when it comes from non-black people of color, because the people you feel SHOULD be your natural allies aren’t. Many non-black people of color seem to recognize the racism that THEIR groups face but don’t understand the specific anti-black racism Black people face. Nor do many non-black people of color understand how they can be complicit with white supremacy by engaging in anti-blackness and colorism.
