Church Kicks Out 92-Year-Old Woman for Not Tithing

Churches are something else nowadays. By ‘something else’, I mean the most shady. Meet Josephine King, a 92-year-old woman, who was a member of her church for more than 50 years. But that wasn’t good enough for the First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia.

King recently received a letter from the church informing that she was no longer a member because she didn’t tithe.

“Josephine King is no longer considered a member of the First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia,” read Gerald Simmons, as he skimmed over the letter addressed to his aunt.

Pastor Derrick Mike says King has shown non-support towards the church and that involves “constant and consistent financial and physical participation.”

“She was stunned. She was disappointed. She was shocked,” said Simmons. Simmons said his aunt has been sick for months, which was why she wasn’t attending services.

“You shouldn’t chase the individuals down,” said Simmons. “You shouldn’t do that. If that’s the case, you’re money hungry.”

Oh, as so many churches are.

It’s time we started thinking critically about churches and their utility. If a sickandshutin 92-year old woman does not get visits and food and assistance, then there is literally no point to this congregation.

She gave them money and time and got NO return on her investment. The only tithing you should be doing is to your IRA, savings and stock account.

I have read a lot of cruel stories, but this is one of the most cruel stories that I have read in my life. This woman constantly supported the church and the church responded to her in a disrespectful way when she is sick. The church can easily send some money to help her medical needs (which is the reason why she didn’t tithe). I’m glad that she is not in the church anymore, because the world now see how many folks who exploit the name of God see profit and self aggrandizement as more important than compassion, love, and respect for our elders. Respecting our elders is part of African tradition and it’s part of a human ethos. She deserves better than this and the pastor should be ashamed of himself. I wish the best for the 92 year old Sister too.

Well, that’s one of the reasons why I’m ATHEIST and proud.

Because you think believing in nothing is better than believing in the creator of the Universe?

That says it all, then. Good luck to you!

That’s so wrong. She’s an elder which means THEY should be taking care of her. These “church” congregations are just faith based businesses, that’s all. I’m so glad I freed myself from it all.

Ridiculous. It’s all about discernment. If your church doesn’t do anything but shame folks for not tithing, but can’t visit a sick and shut-in member, it’s time to find a new church. They should be scorned and shamed into closing.

They should be shamed but too many black people in particular are more loyal to their pastor than to God. So it will be business as usual in few weeks when the fuss dies down.

Unfortunately, you write the truth. I’ve seen that in many churches that I’ve attended over the years.

Awful and stupid on the part of that church….the church is not a bank. I believe in tithing, but I also believe that tithing is up to the individual. Churches should not force members to tithe.
