Another controversy has struck the Baltimore Police Department as the son of Lt. Col. Melvin Russell has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of his roommate.

The Baltimore Sun reports Melvin Russell, 28, was arrested yesterday in connection with Monday’s murder in the 4900 block of Challedon Road in Southwest Baltimore. According to police, the lieutenant’s son and his 49-year-old roommate got into a fight; both sustained stab wounds and were taken to hospitals with the roommate, who has not been identified, being pronounced dead. The younger Russell was treated and released, but now faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, assault and weapons violations.

Baltimore County prosecutors will handle the case which was handed over to them by Baltimore state’s attorney’s office due to a conflict of interest.

“State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby has a personal relationship with this family and felt it best to refer this case to an independent prosecutor,” her office said in a statement.

Garret Glennon, chief of the Circuit Court division for the county state’s attorney’s office, has been assigned to the case. Lt. Russell, who leads the Police Department’s Community Collaboration Unit, has yet to put out a statement, but the Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police has tweeted their support.
