Arrest Made in Ferguson Police Shooting

A 20-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in connection to two police officers being shot during a protest last week in Ferguson, Missouri.

St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch said charges brought against Jeffrey Williams include assault in the first degree. Williams is local to St. Louis and was previously on probation for accepting stolen goods.

According to McCulloch, Williams was at the protest and acknowledged firing the shots, but he may have been firing at someone else and not the police.

Other people who attended the protest stated that they have no idea who Williams is and don’t want him affiliated with their peaceful protests. In an interview with Huffington Post, two organizers attempted to distance themselves from Williams.

“We don’t know him,” said Tony Rice, the founder of Ground Level Support.

Alicia Street also has been actively involved in the Ferguson protests and says she’s unfamiliar with Williams also.

“I have never seen him at a protest. I cannot recall that I even seen him that night. We know a lot of people out there, we really do. I even showed pictures to other regular protesters and they said they didn’t know him,” Street told HuffPost.

There are certainly questions that must be asked about the man. Of course, this man is not a peaceful protester. Many organizations have said that they don’t know who Williams is. The reactionaries will exploit this situation as a way to pain a broad brush against all protesters. The irony is that this man has been charged for wounding police officers, yet many officers have never been charged for killing black men, black women, and black children all across America. That reality is something to think about indeed.
