10 Year Old Senegalese Girl Raped & Denied Abortion

A 10-year-old girl Senegalese girl who was raped by her neighbor and pregnant with twins has lost the fight to get an abortion due to Senegal’s abortion laws.

“She is going to have to go through with the pregnancy,” said Fatou Kine Camara, president of the Senegalese women lawyers’ association, which has been campaigning to the authorities for her to have a legal abortion.

Senegal, in west Africa, has one of the toughest abortion laws on the continent. Woman found guilty of having an abortion face 10 years in jail, reports The Guardian. Forty women were held in custody in Senegal in the first six months of 2012, linked to abortion charges. Not only are the women punished, but the doctors who help them can lose their license.

“For a termination to be legal in Senegal, three doctors have to certify that the woman will die unless she aborts immediately. Poor people in Senegal are lucky if they see one doctor in their lifetime, let alone three,” Camara said.

“A single medical certificate costs 10,000 CFA francs ($20), which is prohibitive. We had a previous case of a raped nine-year-old who had to go through with her pregnancy. We paid for her caesarean but she died a few months after the baby was born, presumably because the physical trauma of childbirth was too great.”

This is pathetic. What type of country would pass laws like this? I really hope someone takes this girl to Europe, America, or South Africa where she can get the treatment she deserves. Twin pregnancy for a 10 year old is extremely dangerous for someone who lives in a more advanced country. But for this girl, living in a country that doesn’t have the most modern health care, she will probably die. She shouldn’t have to die because someone raped her and the laws are anti-women.

America is a country where half of the electorate wants to pass laws like Senegal’s.

        Yep, they do.

Completely agree that she shouldn’t have to die or be permanently damaged just because someone raped her.

Lord have mercy! I hope that baby does not die in childbirth!

I also hope the rat who raped her is rotting in prison!

The pope would be delighted, to have a baby dying after giving birth. This type of thought is cruel heartless and primitive. Where can we send money to help this baby?

I am probably showing my ignorance here but I don’t understand why taking them out of the country is not a consideration? If you are able to pay for a Caesarean, there are funds somewhere for these kinds of situations. Why not use them to take them somewhere that would allow the abortion, rather than trying to fight a system that you know you will lose and probably kill a little girl?

Have you missed the part where this is a crime? Yes, the little girl can have the abortion legally in South Africa or wherever, but she will still have to return home where she and the people who facilitated the abortion would be imprisoned. It’s not possible to keep such a thing a secret so people would know of course that the pregnancy was deliberately terminated.

Exactly! An organization needs to take her out of the country, get her the abortion, and then keep her in the country until the 9 months are over so she can say she adopted out her kids. It could work, it just requires resources.

It is the Gates Foundation that wants black babies not to be born, not the pope.

This is infuriating. The lives of women and girls seem to matter so little to lawmakers in many countries. The man should die if the girl dies due to pregnancy related complications. He should’ve already been killed for violating her in the first place. I agree with taking her out of the country for the abortion, although I do wonder if she would face any consequences upon her return to Senegal. Hopefully not.

    Wow, heartbreaking.

If she doesn’t survive pregnancy, the rapist should be sentenced to death by inflation.

I do not normally believe in abortion, but a 10 year old could easily die from a singleton birth and most likely won’t even make it to term with twins. This is not an adult who consented to sex and got pregnant, this is a little girl who is probably going to die. 🙁

It is so sad that a female child’s life is less important than a fetus. So terrible and tragic and so sick.
