Nothing Is Funny About The Trolling Of Penie’s 2014 Self-Worth Upliftment Cartoon

A positive and uplifting cartoon titled “Self Worth” circulated the internet depicting a Black woman stepping over her obstacles of last year– like jealousy, heartbreak, negativity and temper– to embrace a new year with “love”, “peace”, “focus” and “God” to guide her. It was drawn by a Black female artist that can be found on Instagram @Peniel_Enchill, whose work is dedicated to Black beauty and high fashion.

Sadly, the pic was altered by an obviously misogynistic, confused, fellow that goes by the twitter handle @MrGotcha_Bitch.

2e0l44g

Here is a look at some of the, in his own words, “more real” (or realistic, I suppose) changes he decided were necessary:

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 3.18.32 PM

The second cartoon displays a Black woman stepping into the New Year, visibly pregnant (despite the fact that she had abortions in the year 2014?). The whereabout of her hair bun and her boyfriend are also in question. Luckily, the woman has somehow managed to maintain her self-esteem, even though she spent the year prior “tricking”, “boosting” and “lying”.

Many Black women took to message boards to express disgust and dismay about the changes made to the image, calling it “disgusting”, “degrading” and an obvious “attack on Black women”.  If nothing else, the cartoon was most certainly an attack on the Black female artist’s work.

Yet, it seems that the man responsible for such negative reactions sees this as nothing more than a joke. When asked what he thought about all of the women who were offended by the “parody”, he responded, “when I see something I don’t like I keep it moving…. I don’t troll people……. ”

Okay. It is obvious that we should not expect any degree of intelligence from this human being, but is he serious? By taking the work of a Black female artist, made to inspire and uplift other Black woman, and degrading the imagery and purpose, he is doing precisely what he is angry others have (and will continue to do) to him: trolling. Per a quick Wikipedia search of the word: “a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous or off-topic messages in an online community with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response.”

@MrGotcha_Bitch, you are a troll.

Furthermore, your humor is baseless, tactless and quickly reveals why you have only managed to accrue 597 followers, despite filling the online world with 10.9k of your mostly misogynistic, immature and distasteful comedy. It comes as no surprise that the man who uses the word “bitch”, “bae” or “dick” in almost every post was only acquainted with misguided, lying, cheating and tricking Black women in 2014 who would inspire the creation of such depressing “parodies”.

Perhaps, in the year 2015, you should aspire to surround yourself with more intelligent, productive, hard-working, beautiful Black women, like the wonderful young lady who took the time and effort to produce quality art. That may require that you introduce some words other than “niggas” or “bitch” to your repertoire, though. Not sure if you could manage that. Still, I will give you a few words to start with: 1. misogyny, 2. propaganda” and (pardon me, this last one is a phrase) 3. black self-hate”.

After that rudimentary education, you may come to understand why so many Black women are not laughing at your comedy.

For 2015, maybe Clutch could stop advertising every.single.anti.black.women. insult from anonymous, random fools? Would have been enough simply to post the artist’s original work; it’s not my taste but I am sure many people would be uplifted by it. Why only report on the ugliness that tried to sully the young lady’s message?

Thank you. As offensive as the changes may have been in regards to the original picture, I find it hard to be outraged. There are far more offensive and racist vlogs through youtube and yahoo. However, I ignore those videos and block them out of my youtube profile. As for yahoo, I ignore their news section and only use my yahoo account when needed (I had set up a gmail account after receiving so much spam). I have bigger fish to fry and don’t feel like being outraged every time someone decides to show their behind online. Clutch needs to stop giving these fools publicity and power that they don’t have. Trolling is just part of being online. There are people who live for getting under some else’s skin. I think the saying, “don’t feed the troll,” sums up the best approach. Once you know someone just wants to piss you off, and not actually debate ideas, it is time to ignore them until they go away, because a troll without a response just looks like a fool.

I actually haven’t seen this “remake” picture, there is another going around as well that I saw on Charlamagne’s instagram page (which i sure he didn’t create) so that makes a total of 2. I also agree every little thing negative does not need to be highlighted with an article (which I must admit I didn’t finish reading).

I just wanted to comment that most of the comments against the original picture had nothing to do with what the remakes are saying but more so people seem to be fed up or trolling this year for lack of better words of the same ol’ new years resolutions, new year, new me stuff thats starts up this time of year that, but they been saying the same thing, doing the same thing, since 2009 and have seemingly done nothing to stop the behavior/thoughts that they want to escape year after year. I haven’t personally seen such a backlash again new years resolutions as I have this year so i think its just that

Some of these hateful, misogynistic black males disgust the hell out of me to the point that I truly don’t care whether they live or die. Almost 80 years ago, Zora Neale Hurston said “Black women are the mules of the world,” and it’s STILL true today. Way too many black men are STILL trying to pin the “divide” in the community on black women creating the Black feminist movement, completely ignoring the terrible systematic misogyny WITHIN the black community that necessitated it. I was talking to another black woman about this and we both agreed that we never knew how much some black men literally HATED black women, and ONLY black women, until we came online. On IG and Twitter and on blogs and websites, they are constantly trolling, harassing, insulting, and denigrate black women. And instead of defending us from the COUNTLESS misogynistic black males who PUBLICLY degrade us like Tommy Sotomayor, Tariq Nasheed, SargeWilyPete, the so-called “good” brothers ONLY seem to come out of the woodwork to derail and diminish black women who confront this misogyny. PLEASE.

Anti-blackness + misogyny = misogynoir. ANYONE in society is capable of engaging in misogynoir against black women – this INCLUDES black men. Misogynoir is the reason why instead of HELPING us or DEFENDING us, these misogynistic black men just pile on with everybody else in society. Even when black men are in the wrong, black women defend their reputations and their humanity. Example? Black FEMINISTS on Twitter were the ones who talked about the fact that MIKE BROWN was being subjected to character assassination after his death and organized a huge series of marches in his honor. So until these fucking selfish, insensitive, callous, misogynistic black males get the fuck off our backs, start defending us and being loyal to us the SAME WAY we have been to them, and stop blaming US for shit that is CLEARLY the result of white supremacy and racism being inflicted on them by WHITE MEN and WHITE WOMEN, I can’t coalesce with black men as a collective. If black men collectively can’t or won’t get it, than I’m moving on and I refuse to: A) prop them up anymore B) worry about protecting “black masculinity/ manhood” anymore C) worry about protecting the public image of black men anymore and D) go hard in the paint to defend the reputations and lives of random black men the way I used to anymore. Why? Because black men DO NOT RECIPROCATE. That is it and that is all. It’s my fucking human right to devote my time, energy, money, and sympathy to whatever I want to. Period.

Buuuuuuuuuuut I’ve seen black women teach colorism and misogyny to their sons. So don’t let all black women off the hook. Whites don’t alway = racist and blacks don’t always = perfect victims so Black men don’t always = migynoir and intraracial hatred and black women don’t always = mule and victim. All I’m saying. I seriously can’t even believe I’m defending black men. What a laugh. But to get my point across that some black women pass this down to their kids after they’ve inernalized it…I don’t mind.

If your supposedly “clean-cut” psycho azz is constantly trolling black women NUMEROUS websites for black women, then *something* is wrong with you. Period. Those type of black “men” are WEAK and because they got their heart broken in the past by a woman they had no business messing with, they want to take it out on all black women. Maybe if people would take some SELF accountability instead of lumping all men or women together, then they wouldn’t be so miserable. Sigh. I disagree with the notion that this shouldn’t have been posted/reported on this site. What is so harrowing about confronting ignorant black men and the ilk they choose to spread among social media? I get that there are needs for more positive articles on this site, however of the many positive articles that I click on very few comment. Plus If it is a positive article, there is more than likely someone (or someones) who will, ironically, disparage it in the comment section. I’d implore those who wish to see more positivity to visit the actual positive posts more often as opposed to gravitating to the negative ones and complaining about them because all you’ve really done is show that while you want more positive articles, the negative ones grab you more. Now, what does that say? As far as this person’s doctored artwork, I am not surprised by this and he is exactly the type that probably depends on a black woman to support his non-career.

Black women who call their kids n-words and such and tell their sons to only bring home light skin women. I’ve seen it. And there is the fact that most of these men don’t think much of black women to begin with because of what they see in their MOTHERS.

And concentrate on making it to the end of the day without getting locked up?! Yikes. Are you black?! Is this what you think of black men?! We are doomed as a race.

People who say fuckery like this: “I won’t be one of those black people who act like all black people are right and whites are wrong.” usually don’t understand white supremacy/ racism. I don’t know how else to help you with your ETHNOCENTRISM, INTERNALIZED SEXISM, your WARPED conception of racism, or your inability to conceive of how SYSTEMIC OPPRESSION works except to say that if you you need to start from the place knowing better than to BLAME WOMEN for the BEHAVIOR of GROWN ASS BLACK MEN. There are better ways to be “accountable” than coming on here and insinuating that all the disgusting, misogynistic black men we see are the products of African-American single mothers.

You COULD try starting from the place of recognizing that we all live in patriarchal, white supremacist culture that hates black women and inculcates people who are insensitive and hostile to Black womanhood no matter WHO raised them. You also need to stop being ethnocentric and stop looking down your It’s a signifies internalized sexism. I will say this, I think a good book to check out would be by a professor of anthropology named Audrey Smedley. It’s called “Race in North America: Origin and Evolution of a Worldview”. She REALLY breaks down the history of race and racism and the differences between the different racial systems that exist around the globe.

Instead of worrying about what OTHER people are doing, and how much better you erroneously *think* you are than other people of African descent who happen to be of other nationalities and ethnicities, take your issues to therapy.

You are nothing but a DEMENTED TROLL, but I will say this: A good amount of the black men I meet offline are cool, so I don’t what the fuck is wrong with the black male knuckleheads I encounter online. You would think they’re troglodytes but NO, they’re all NORMAL, average everyday black men – which is FRIGHTENING. Anyway, I’m too through with giving the misogynistic black men I encounter online the benefit of the doubt that we are on the same side because we’re black.

Some of these hateful, misogynistic black men are LITERALLY coming from a place of out and out hatred and misogyny for black women. They literally have no human compassion for black women at all and they have truly demonstrated the Zora Neale Hurston adage that “All my skinfolk ain’t my kinfolk.” Some of these black “men” literally speak no better of black women than a white supremacist would – and I always fight fire with with fire. They really are in no position to be DEGRADING to black women and I NOW am ENJOYING reminding them of that fact at each and every single turn. That is all. So I repeat: Instead of worrying about what OTHER people are doing, and how much better you erroneously *think* you are than other people of African descent who happen to be of other nationalities and ethnicities, take your issues to therapy.

You need therapy more than me. Your soul is troubled. Ranting about black men to me. Misplaced anger. I don’t care. Tell it to black men directly. Damaged ass. The bitterness is repulsive. You enjoy reminding them?! Of What exactly?! That they’re thugs? As those idiots degrade you, you reply with more degradation towards them?!

Your RANTS and your salty bitterness towards black women and African-Americans is what’s repulsive, particularly on a website for BLACK WOMEN. Take your disgusting, demented, damaged trolling ass elsewhere, like straight to therapy. Kay, moron?

This doesn’t bother be at all because the person who altered the photo isn’t the type of man who altered the image isn’t in my purview. He isn’t my family, the type of man that is in my professional work setting, on my radar for dating, or in my social circle. Therefore, I am completely indifferent toward him and his opinions. I don’t see all black men as by “brothas” so that makes it easy to dismiss those that aren’t in my life.

The male (not man since this male is not a real man) who made that mocking-filled image is a disgrace. The Sister Peniel wanted to show a drawing of a Black Woman achieving her goals and overcoming obstacles in a positive way. Her cartoon was beautiful, very artistic, and it showed the excellent message about black women empowerment. The cartoon of Sister Peniel was never meant to express strife among both genders. It was about the positive upliftment of black women in general, which is a great thing. This is why we have to defend black women and their dignity. The only way we can stop evil is to confront it, fight it, and defeat it. Even some of the black “conscious” crowd embraces this overt misogyny and anti-women attitude. These sick misogynists don’t just include people like Tommy Sotomayor and Tariq Nasheed (who are profane-talking, disrespectful people in their own rights). These people are all over the Internet spewing the lie that black women should be treated as second class citizens under the guise of “Black Power.” I believe in Black Love, Black Unity, and Black Power. I will always believe in those concepts forever (as I love Africa with all of my heart, soul, and spirit), but I will never believe in the suppression of the human rights of any woman.

Black women have the right to advance their aspirations and they have the right to their own human autonomy. The only way where the system of white supremacy can be defeated is when black women and black men are liberated. These anti-women haters omit that Sojourner Truth, Septima Clark, Ella Baker, and other Sisters never wanted to be in the back of the bus. They wanted justice without exception. That is what true freedom is all about. Black people have shed blood and died for the cause of freedom and liberation. We have to continue that fight today.

    Bless Sister Peniel Enchill
