If Black Men Could Stop Creating Memes About Black Women That’d Be Great

d1a1c925-4cae-4596-a08b-6309e2182176

Before Raven-Symoné became the bane of everyone’s existence, one of the greatest memes on the Internet was the one with Olivia saying “Dudes be like can you cook. I be like, can you build a house?” The text was short but the context ran deep as the ocean blue as just one example of how men, dare we say black men specifically, expect the world from women and bring little, if anything, to the table.

Even if some black men are the closest any of us will ever see to perfection, there continues to be this Instagram community of brothas so quick to point out black women’s flaws and even compare them to women of other races who they feel are superior. Essentially it’s the case for dating outside of one’s race personified in a meme and, personally, we’re over it.

Take the image above which you don’t even have to engage beyond the tagline at the end, “Black girls suck, Asian women are the superior choice” to know there’s a serious problem. The meme has been making it’s way around IG, shared by overeager brothers who have forgotten their moms and sister are black girls too, reducing us to the racial stereotypes we hoped only white men would uphold in 2016.

But lo and behold, here we are being deemed hypersexual, attitudinal, masculine creatures by our very own men at the same time mainstream magazines are finally seeing strong, muscular bodies like that of Serena Williams and Misty Copeland’s beautiful. What’s wrong with this picture?

Well, what’s primarily wrong is self-hate and group think. As much as we talk about racism and tricks of the white elite, it amazes us how often black men fall into these traps. Rather than shut down these types of overgeneralized fallacies, they repost and share as a co-sign that they agree with the sentiments shared, leaving us to fend for ourselves and them (hello Black Lives Matter, but that’s another topic altogether).

For once, we’d like to see men report memes like this, create new memes exposing the lies of memes like this, and support the unwaveringly faithful black women whose timelines are filled with messages about black kings and holding brothas down, only to be told they’re inferiority to another minority. Never is there an understanding that perhaps we have attitudes because we spend 90% of our day defending ourselves and our men. Or that our bodies are masculine because we’re doing the labor our men should be doing, if only they weren’t dating other women or behind bars or dead. Or that the “sexy talk” vernacular deemed ghetto is the very same language that seeps into the mainstream day by day and is appropriated by our white counterparts. We won’t even get into the idea of our features being too large — especially when they’re the same African traits our brothers have but that seem to be forgotten once a non-black woman gives them a chance.

All we’re saying is it would be nice for someone to have our back. For memes like this to stop being circulated before we even see them and have a chance to react. For black men to stop drinking the self-hating kool-aid and refuse to participate in the destruction of black women and our beauty. There’s a reason memes like this are far more prevalent on the internet than images of black women tearing down black men. If brothas stopped to think about that for a second, we bet they’d be far less apt to share a silly picture like this again.

    One of MANY reasons why black women need to jump ship and look out for self.

    Notice how it’s BLACK WOMEN marching and protesting for those who will not do the same. It’s pathetic.

    Miss me with all the excuses about how “we’re all in this together.” It’s a day late and dollar short for that now.

    Wake Up, Black Women!

    We keep falling for this divide and conquer f@ckery. This meme is old and was not created by a black person. Why is Clutch bringing something like this back up? I would hate to stop supporting this site with my page clicks but if they keep dredging up and posting garbage instead of healing things I’m gone. No, every post or article doesn’t have to be a “save the world” message, but what purpose does something like this serve but to cause upset and anger and ultimately, if we let it, division. I’m wondering who really owns clutch.

      @bluelight74

      You and me both (wondering who owns this site). From scouring the Internet to post daily anti BW foolishness that would not offend any sane person (like this article), or crying because there are white girls who dont want to play with black dolls, etc. If a black woman does own Clutch, one can only imagine they do not grasp that there are Black women who do not share their insecurity issues. Besides this is 2016, who still re-posts every meme they see on the Internet like its gospel? That they are analyzing and pontificating about this anonymous stupidity from a 4-5 year old meme is sad.

        This site is owned by Clutch Magazine (obviously), which is owned by Elemental Interactive since 2009, who purchased this division by making a stake in the parent operation, Sutton Media, owned by the editor-in-chief of Clutch, Deanna Sutton, self-proclaimed “fly female entrepreneur” and presumable strong black woman. Your beef is primarily with her, despite the fact that Clutch belongs to Elemental, which is owned by GCI Group, which is owned by Grey Global Group, which is owned by WPP plc, the world’s largest advertising company, which is almost certainly (like virtually all massive media outlets in the world) owned by one or more stuffy old rich white guys.

    So this particular clown uses one of the most beautiful WOMEN ever, Pam Grier, and a 12-year-old looking GIRL, to make his point. Pretty sick, in my opinion.

    I refuse to let memes like this, and the ignorant males who create them, affirm me. I am tall, I am dark, I am muscular, I know that I am attractive and sexy. No meme created by some insecure males is going to make me feel otherwise. Period, end of story.

    I would never EVER support and even associate with males who feel this way. No woman should. They are not checking for us so we need to only check for ourselves and those who support us.

                  Jo Malone has a ginger scent that you may like and it’s not very strong. You may want to try Demeter. They have single note fragrances (like lemon, orange, lime or ginger ( and literally hundreds more) You could get a few different bottles of these notes and layer them to create your own unique scent.

  7. January 13, 2016 - Reply

    First, any meme that disrespects any black woman and any black person must be condemned. Memes have disrespected black women and dark skinned black people in social media for a while. That should be condemned 100 percent. Now, regardless if the person who shown that evil meme was a black person or a non-black person, that meme is evil and hurtful. Black women have sacrificed a lot for the human liberation struggle in general. Their sacrifice and their strength must always be respected. Also, black women have every right to be physically athletic if she wants to. Last year, I communicated with an athletic black woman in my job. She was nice, professional, beautiful, and a great coach.

    There are tons of Sisters who exercise and don’t give a concern about the haters. Also, more black men must condemn those (whether they are white, black, etc.) who enact misogynoir. This is a serious problem in our communities. We have to confront and eradicate this problem. I believe in Black families, Black Love, and Black Unity. Yet, I don’t believe in the slander against black women. We know who the misogynists are. Their names are many. They include Tom Leykis, Tariq Nasheed, Tommy Sotomayor, Sgt. Pete, “King” Noble, many white racists, and others. Black girls and Black women have been slandered by cowards who hide behind the Internet. These cowards are not just white racist trolls, but even some black people who believe in the evils of sexism, classism, and patriarchal extremism. So, we are in a fight for the liberation of black people.

    No one can be a misogynist and be a revolutionary at the same time. To be a revolutionary, one must stand up for black women unconditionally. I don’t believe in a divide and conquer strategy that will harm the black community (we know how the FBI used COINTELPRO and other programs to try to foster divisions between Black Panthers in the East Coast and in the West Coast. That sounds very familiar. Nothing is new under the sun), but we have to end misogynoir once and for all if we are to go into the Promised Land. Positive, accurate black images should always be promoted and we want black people collectively to have success, to develop, and to have justice. Black people have the right to be free.

      Exactly! Tommy Scrotumsac couch surfs at various white people’s houses and is dodging child support. If he’s in between sofas, he’s living in his car. (Well that’s what I heard.) He and other males like him put women down because it’s much easier to blame everyone else in the black community for its ills than to take some SELF RESPONSIBILITY and get their own shit together. Plus it’s that old pimp psychology to beat a woman’s self esteem down and then come back and whisper “ain’t nobody gon want you but me”, with the hopes that she’ll believe the media propaganda and “settle” for a dude that plays like a king but is really a pawn. There’s a panoply of sisters who are doing BIG things, and there are a LOT of regular sisters working to take care of business. Instead of looking for THOSE women, they focus on the “lost ones”(the ones with ratchet behavior).

      Besides, whoever made that meme couldn’t be black. Too much of it sounds like something a white person would say. I’ve never seen a sista drink Colt 45 or listen to only rap and Prince.

      • January 13, 2016 - Reply

        @paintgurl40

        Right on Sister,

        Tommy Sotomayor and those of his ilk are the antithesis of manhood. He dodged child support payments and he has been arrested for assaulting a woman. So, he is lower than low. When he doesn’t get his way, he curses on the Internet. In many cases, many of these haters attack black women in order for them to cover up their own evils. They want to escape their own personal responsibility while they lecture black people on “personal responsibility.” They don’t have their stuff together emotionally or mentally. No black woman should be cursed at, harassed, or disrespected period. There are many black women who own businesses, are caring for their families, and are speaking out against injustices. So, these misogynists do use reverse psychology in trying to slander women. Yes, I haven’t heard of a Sister drinking Colt 45 either. Black women deserve their human rights protected just like anyone else. The propaganda from the racists is real and we will always refute these haters from sea to shining sea.

    I think it does more harm than good when we give Instagram posts like these any sort of attention. We really have to stop feeding into the nonsense that a minority in our community seem to to take part in. Study after study debunks the myths that black men don’t find black women attractive (90% of us get married to a black woman). Or the other myth stating black women are not marriage material (Most black women DO get married just later in age than white women).

    We know that the majority of us love each other and respect each other so why give light to the minority in our community who think otherwise. There are “scumbags” in every other race but they ignore there idiots while we acknowledge ours.

    These memes get attention because they know that somewhere out there there are enough black women who will complain or even re-post this meme and all the other ones talking down on black women. Just ignore them and move on; men with memes like these on their social media accounts aren’t the type of people you want to have around you in the first place.
    Also, you know that most men who spread this meme haven’t read a single book since they last read Horton hears a Who. Why would you want someone like that in your life?

    First of all, I don’t know a black man alive who would not have wanted to spend some time with Pam Grier back in the day. Hell, I’m a straight woman and I get all goosey just looking at her 😀 Second, this meme does not read: black-men-created. Instead, it reads: white troll-created. And finally, I’m done with Clutch for pulling this old shit out of the file and helping to pervade such stereotypical bulls**t. And tag it so that when anyone searches for articles on black men or black women, it comes up again, and again. Thanks Clutch.

    IF one was to poll one hundred real black men about the relative desirability of those two women all 100 would choose Pam Grier. Don’t fall for this black ain’t s*it propaganda.

    Asians have flat faces as well-flatter and wider than Black women most of the time. and most of them don’t look like the Asian in the photo. This meme was created by a White man or an Asian Woman.

      @jayster

      It’s western men in general who tear down western or American women by holding us up to a stereotype that is not accurate. We vary just like Western women and range from ugly to hot, from masculine to feminine, domestic to non domestic.

      As an Asian woman, white men use this stereotype to tear down white women too by saying that they are too assertive or feminist, etc. I have gotten some static from Western women in general regardless of race, because of this.

      It’s the ‘grass is greener’ syndrome.

      i was thinking the same that an asian had to create it

    • January 28, 2016 - Reply

      @jayster

      But if a white man made it, why would he compare the Asian woman to the blk woman instead of comparing her to his OWN woman? Makes no sense.

    How do we know who the hell is creating those memes? Black people are so easy to troll and fool because we only react to negative crap. If black people stop reacting to every damn thing said about us by some anonymous trolls hiding behind a laptop you’ll see less of it……but nope, negativity is like catnip for black people. Sad.

      Hmm. Blk men don’t mind “blk people” (I.e. blk women) “reacting” when the same media features another blk man getting sh0t. “Certain” blk people don’t mind the “reactions”then…when it serves them.

    After I read what was under the pictures “I am shacking my head” because no sane black man would write that the reason I say that is I am a man and I know some negative black men however I have never ever heard any black man say anything negative about Pam Grier, that’s why I know this comes from a women or a non black man trying to put enmity between black women and black men, because even the most damage and insane black man would not us Pam Grier to make this point.

        me neither, if a black person do some comparison typical it’s black men/women to white men/women and I have never known a back man to use Pam Grier in a negative light.

        Blk men certainly don’t uplift us, they come to women’s blogs and talk blk to death. Same old stuff. All talk, no action.

  22. January 14, 2016 - Reply

    For real, though….do you really think a black man created that meme? Are you serious? “Flat, apelike noses?” Horselike vaginas? This looks like it has a racist written all over it.
    So black guys are sharing this on Instagram? How many? Two? And even if it were two hundred, lets not act like the majority of black men believe this, because they don’t.
    Sidenote: Pam Grier vs. Anybody is almost the winner by default.

    • January 28, 2016 - Reply

      @LogicalLeopard

      It doesn’t really matter who created it, the point was the blk men were SPREADING IT. Can you understand that ?They were “promoting” it instead of admonishing whoever allegedly made it. See?

      • January 28, 2016 - Reply

        @Ms.

        Well, first of all, when the title of the article says “If Black Men Could Stop Creating Memes About Black Women That’d Be Great.” So it kind of does matter who created it, when the author is accusing black men of doing such. Second, who says they were promoting it? This meme might have gotten passed around, but I have a feeling it got passed around by more people who were outraged by it than people who agreed with it. I mean, the author got outraged and wrote an article about the meme, showing it to all of us. I’d never seen it before.
        Unless somebody has some proof that this was created or spread by black men for malicious reasons, I’m thinking this is nothing more than a plot to cause further division.

        • January 28, 2016 - Reply

          @LogicalLeopard

          I don’t have proof of anything because this is the first time I’m seeing this as well. For all I know, Clutch may have made it. Who knows? It does sound like something I can easily see blk men doing in 2016. I mean, look at Tommy Sotomayor and thousands of other blk men who’ve been making hate videos about blk women on YouTube since white AND ASIAN men BUILT that site.

          • January 28, 2016 - Reply

            @Ms.

            Well, that’s what the whole thing plays to. You say you can easily see black men doing this in 2016. I’m a black man, and I don’t know any black men that would agree with any of this racist nonsense, let alone create it or spread it. You may have some who might agree with the first two entries, but from there it goes downhill. Have you ever heard a black man say, “Ugh, I hate black women because they’re overtly sexual with p*rn star bodies. And they’re always showing too much skin, especially in the summer!” The rest of it is straight garbage as well. The Asian side is the same thing. Who is Ayumi Hamasaki? I hate to stereotype, but how many black men have you heard say, “Wow….if I could just find a girl who was into listening to Ayumi Hamasaki….”
            This is purely meant to be hateful and divisive.

    This is whack, period. Many black women have naturally toned bodies and natural curves that need little maintenance, great skin, nice features and the hair.. I wish the afro would come back like in the in the 70s! Last but not least, inner strength and intelligence. Anyone who can’t appreciate such attributes is missing out. Just sayin.

      @ImpeccableWoman

      But why would he bring up Black women?? It would make more sense for him to compare his own women. It’s really hard for you to imagine that a blk man could do this, isn’t it? Go to YouTube and type in “Blk women” and you will see thousands of blk men saying exactly what is in this meme.

  26. January 14, 2016 - Reply

    Yeah how about not generalising black men with your bullcrap? Guess what there are many black women out there demonizing the image of black men so that they can appease to the image of white males and other non-black males.

    Most of what is in that picture is false. Black African women, black Caribbean women, etc certainly don’t talk like that. Also, you are more likely to find an African woman that is a Virgin than an Asian woman.

      Yup. And this – “we spend 90% of our day defending ourselves and our men” – written unquestioned and unchallenged by her as if it is the natural order for women to have to defend and rescue any collective of grown men. The author is crying and begging for love and acceptance where she sees hatred. This article exposes numerous issues she has but doesn’t question. She needs therapy. She is spreading some of her damage to others by reposting extreme material that can assault the psyches of innocent black girl children.

I know it’s better than this, right? This place is turning into Bossip with better syntax, please, listen to what your readers are saying and cut it out with this. Anyway, I’ve dignified it too much by viewing and commenting on, but it’s at a breaking point.

    Let people choose who they want to fall in love with. Race gas nothing to do with pure love. Every race has good and bad in it. I know of bi racial relationships and same race relationships that are successful so letting a meme inspire your choice is a recipe for disappointment. Use your heart .

    Anyone who has lived in Asia knows the truth. There is what you see, then there is what’s real. Asian women do all the same stuff that any other race of woman does, and she oftentimes feels no type of way about it, to be mercenary, whorish, or whatever, because there is no Christian-based morality system in place.

    But let these marks keep thinking otherwise. Also, Pam Grier in her characters was strong and assertive and rose above adversity. She was down for her people and did whatever she could to help them. But okay. I could not care less about racists not finding me attractive. Instead, I’m grateful. Stop giving them a platform, because, clearly, folks in the comments are not falling for the okey doke. We’re woke on this site, so there’s no need for “stories” like this.

    Read it, move on n not comment?
    For years the black community has told me I am not black enough (probably because I don’t fit into the criteria deemed relevant as the aforementioned article has so diligently included as a citation).

    What the hell does that even mean? I don’t have enough kids? I don’t like arguing with fools? I’m sorry, i don’t suffer idiocy well.
    I’m not a dirty secret, no i don’t want to be your next baby mama nor do i want to be your first black gf either. It’s sad. Quit looking at how much melanin I have more than you and look at who I am as a human! Or even better: stop stereotyping n innovate
