InstagramBabies: The Latest Baby Name Trend Is Instagram Filters

Baby name trends are as fun as they are a little ridiculous. According to BabyCenter, in 2010, the toplist was a colorful mix of Teen Mom inspired monikers, locations and major players from the Old Testament.

Last year, folks were naming their newborns after Orange Is The New Black and Grey’s Anatomy stars. They even drew some inspiration from Disney’s Frozen. This year, however, Instagram filters are topping the list. And yes, you read that correctly. Lux, Ludwig and Amaro spiked in popularity for baby boys. For girls, Valencia, Juno and Willow are on the rise.

“This is the first time we’ve seen technology break through as a source of name inspiration,” BabyCenter’s global editor-in-chief, Linda Murray, said.

Additionally, film and television are still ranking in the top sources of baby-name inspiration. Empire names have been popping up, and — perhaps thanks to Interstellar – and The Martian– space-related names are also growing in popularity: Venus, Jupiter, Sunny, and Stella are still making their way up the charts.

With Instagram adding new filters periodically, there’s no telling where the baby name options will end. We haven’t heard too many Cremas, Perpetuas or Inkwells being referenced so surely, a line is being drawn somewhere.

Would you name your baby after an IG filter?

It is what it is. Humans are curious by nature and some want to follow trends. Being an individual is so much more fulfilling than just following a trend (for the sake of “popularity”).

On a solemn note: We send prayers to the families of the victims in California.

Exactly, and yes, our prayers do go out to those families. It’s such a tragedy.

I named my son after an Egyptian God, so to each his/her own.

Honestly, unless your parent made up your name, all of our names came from some influence or the other. Of the 6 “instagram filter names”, 5 are names that i’m sure we’ve all heard before. It is what it is.
