The Smith Family Pretty Much Summed Up Everyone’s Opinion About The MTV Video Music Awards

BSkIUA-CcAEBcWt

Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was a clusterfuck of what the fuckery and cultural appropriation.

There was Katy Perry and her “grill”:

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Everyone kept on hollering “What’s up Brooklyn” every time they had a chance. Maybe a “What’s Up Gentrified Brooklyn?” would have been more apropos. The only person to represent Brooklyn was Lil Kim’s newest face. Was Jay-Z not available?

But let’s talk about Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus. Just in case you missed it, skip ahead to the 3:00 mark:

Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” hit wasn’t enough to garner him an award. He was shut out in all of the categories he was nominated in. All the while, Marvin Gaye’s family was probably sitting back saying, “Karma’s a bitch”.  Somewhere in America, Billy Ray Cyrus’ achy breaky heart was breaking into pieces.

But not all of the performances were shitastic. Although Justin Timberlake did receive a Vanguard award, did a medley of his hits and even reunited with the other members of N’Sync for 20 seconds:

The performances of the night definitely have to go to Bruno Mars for his performance of “Gorillas” and Kanye West’s performance of “Blood on the Leaves”.  Both of their performances were simple and to the point. Bruno Mars thrusted his pelvis a couple of times and Kanye emoted.

That’s all I got. There’s a new drug out called crackcocaineweedecstacymolliesacid and apparently everyone at the award show was on it. Two hours worth of nothing. Thanks, MTV.

    Thank God I canceled cable!

    I threw up in my mouth watching the Miley Cyrus performance. Paula Patton should have snatched that little girl off the stage by her pony tail.

    Well, at least now the BET awards no longer holds the monopoly on ratchetness.

      @Lisss

      After the vmas I thought everytime I go to complain about the BET awards I need to remember this moment.

  4. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    We can’t complain about Bet calling it EBT. The VMA has been dead along with the movie awards. It was all over the place and had no host. Honestly it was kinda funny seeing white folks shucking and jiving.

    Didn’t watch the award show at all, went to sleep. I use to love music awards show but now I am over them and I don’t trust a video music award from a channel that doesn’t even play videos. From what I can see Miley had a horrible performance that’s what she gets from trying to leech off the stereotypical view of black people. Theo only thing I would like to see is Rihanna’s expression. I don’t know what is going on with Robin Thicke. I mean his music has gotten really vulgar and it seemed like he is changing for the worst. JT is overrated to me but hey it’s the VMA so I knew he and Gaga would get a lot of love. I bet there wasn’t any r&B mention or thought about in this award show.

    The VMAs hasn’t been good since the year 2000. That was the last year Chris Rock hosted. Yes, clusterfuck is the perfect word to sum the VMAs since then.

    Honestly, I watched five minutes of it last night. I saw Lady Gaga sitting front row in her underwear and bra. What was that about? It seemed that they just pushed Kevin Hart on stage to fill in the holes or gaps of time they seemed have. People were walking around in the audience aimlessly. The whole production just seemed unorganized. It’s like MTV isn’t even trying anymore.

    The 90s were the best when it came to pop culture and MTV.

  7. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    they’re making a mockery of black art/culture, and the black folks involved allow it. smh.

  8. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Peoplewere complaining not enouogh blacks represented at the awards, but were the VMA’s ever really for black people?
    I was appallled and utterly disgusted at Miley Ray Cyrus in every way. That tongue stick out and bending over to push her flat ass was disgusting and inappropriate on every level imagineable.
    clearly Bey and Jay had better things to do than attend smh

    i do not have cable, but i just had to comment on that pic of the smith family. HI-LA-RI-OUS!!! they all look like they gone need shock therapy to get the image out of their heads. LOLOL…

    Okay. I just watched the Miley Cyrus’ performance, and DIED seeing the teddy bears hump the backup dancers from behind…

    And what’s going on with Miley’s tongue?

    I was out last night with friends, and a 3 of them actually left early to catch this joke of an awards show. When I got home and turned on the TV, I couldn’t figure out why they were so eager to see that garbage. I watched less than 10 minutes (intermittently, while flipping back and forth) of it and I was appalled by what little I did see.

    But Jaden Smith is always looking like that though……

    Rihanna and one directions’reactions were hilarious tho lol

    • August 26, 2013 - Reply

      @LolaChi

      YES!!! Rihanna and 1D faces’ were awesome along with the Smith’s. But I am going to need Miley to never say she learned or was inspired by twerking in New Orleans because clearly she wasn’t…I am just going to need her to stop and live comfortably on those Disney’s checks. Where was Kanye West when you needed him to interrupt something… But am I the only one who thinks lil Kim looks good? But looking at all of these awards shows comfirms to me that all the truly great artists are either retired, dead or not mainstream because the crap that pass for music now a days are sad : (

  14. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Yeah the only difference is she flaunted that behavior onstage while they (celebs in general) engage iin much worse antics behind closed doors. Whatever, this is what the culture they publicize and flaunt has bred, it’s just the next level and it will soon become the norm to see trash like this because when the industry demands your dignity, there are always sellers.

    Also, Rihanna even has some performances that are just a step above this mess Miley pulled. Gaga was practically naked the entire show and during her performance…

    We have all been exposed and desensitized to the next level of raunchiness the industry will probably start rolling out in new and veteran acts. Miley was just brave enough to follow orders. Anyway, Im not here for all the hypocrisy.

      @Deb

      Gaga in her thong was trashy as hell!

  15. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    I gotta go with the Smith Family and Rihanna for the Best Reaction Awards, what the hell was Robin Thicke doing having Miley doing this duet. That chick is nothing but a Disney gimmick that is going way out of her lane to ditch the image, I mean burning it down. Lord knows I don’t believe in shaming women for their size but, who thought to put this girl in that outfit calling herself twerking with her Hank Hill shaped ass. Can you say not flattering, then Robin dressed like Beetle Juice. Gaga and Katy Perry are examples that if you put out any music at this stage the stans shall eat it up no matter if it sucks. Kim was tweeting how Kanye was the best but, some sports blogger tweeted her saying should yall family be looking for Lamar lol.

    Lil Kim what insecurity allowed to happen to her face is sad, anyways since videos have been so marginalized on MTV anyway the last good VMA’s was 2003 for me. I don’t see a problem with Miley getting called out when her twerking exhibition has been called out when black females did it and got trashed, whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Also can we stop with the grills already especially if that’s not your thing to begin with.

    White trash culture attacked the VMAs and clearly won!!!This is white privilege. If miley was black Fox news would be freaking out, talking about how black culture is responsible for 78% illegitimate birth rates, blah blah blah.

      @BeanBean

      An MSNBC correspondent had this to say: “Mika Brzezinski: Miley Cyrus VMA Performance ‘Disturbing,’ ‘Disgusting,’ ‘Pathetic'”…These were some of the things Brzezinski had to say:

      “That was really, really disturbing.”

      “That young lady, who is 20, is obviously deeply troubled, deeply disturbed…probably has an eating disorder.”

      “That was disgusting and embarrassing.”

      “I feel terrible.”

      “That was really, really bad.”

      “They should be ashamed of themselves.”

      “She is a mess. Someone needs to take care of her.”

      “I don’t want to see that ever again on this show.”

      “It was pathetic.”

      “She doesn’t look healthy.”would post a link, but clutch won’t allow it in the comment sections or most recently, as a link in the details either.

        Yea I watched that this morning!!! I know fox will find a way to blame blacks for Miley’s stupidity. Like saying that black culture causes white kids to act this way. No, stupidity causes kids of all races to act this way!!

    I don’t know what drugs Robin Thicke was on to think it was a good idea to sing ANY song with Miley Cyrus but he needs to get off those ASAP. That is not attractive at all Miley and I was horrified.

      Plus, Breaking Bad was on so my tv quota for the week was satisfied.

  18. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Okay why, why, why, were the sista’s butts used as props? I had to smh and laugh throughout the entire show. Honestly Jay Z and all of the other rappers who wanted white approval so bad have garnered it, and in the process have relinquished hip hop to whites to fully appropriate, and profit from. Mind you, they somehow beat (black rappers) in every category they went up against them on. BTW only one Black person even won an award Janelle Monae–and that was for art direction…not her brilliant music.

    The main fan base for rap is now Whites, which means hip hop is dead. Macklemore ain’t never lied on the White privilege tip. They have engaged in cultural drag are getting paid and receiving awards while doing it. That’s some post racial for you. Thicke’s “hit” was the most glaring example of just how much and how far white appropriation of black music and culture has gone.

    Hopefully this will spur those within the industry to reach within and create real music instead of parodies of blackness and the black experience.

    I was watching the Tina Turner interview on OWN.

    Uggggh, She is soooo gross! Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake are straight up culture vultures, Macklemore can acknowledge his priviledge all he wants to but that’s not gonna stop him from being in the position he is, is it? All these people benefiting of a music style that doesn’t even belong to them angers me. Miley Cyrus wanted something “Black” for her music and style. Well I tell ya, this ain’t it! So insulting and ignorant. And it’s insulting that what she’s doing, being a tramp!, is even being associated with us.

    As Black women you damn right we know how to get down but it don’t mean all of us shake our assess and bump and grind all day everyday and in public! She needs to get real.

  22. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    I was watching ‘Breaking Bad’ last night…but I popped in just in time to see the *NSYNC reunion (only thing I cared about aside from Bruno Mars, who was the BEST) so I just saw highlights after the fact and man, oh, man this was LAME. I don’t know why everyone is shocked, this is typical of MTV to do this at the VMA’s, wild stuff is always going down, just that it wasn’t golden greatness like in the ’90’s and 2000’s, it just proved how mainstream music is just terrible.

    And Miley was just an embarrassment to herself. I found myself cackling at it mostly, cause getting offended by this untalented mess is a waste of my precious time. I’m actually cackling more at people who are offended by this. She’s not acting like my Black arse or any of my Black friends and peers, so why should I care? She made herself look a fool last night and Paula Patton should’ve gone up there Kanye style to stop her. Even though Rihanna has no business shading somebody (homegirl can barely move on stage), her face during the performance was the greatest, so priceless

      @GlowBelle

      I feel you on the Miley being an embarrassment to herself bit. I was cackling along with you.

      But I don’t think it’s Paula Patton’s role to come up on stage and restrain Miley. Robin Thicke was a willing participant in all of this foolishness. Shame, because I really love his music.

        @Eva

        Oh, I was making a terrible joke. I don’t think she should either, Robin was responsible for that and I think she’s too grown to be snatching wigs off of young fast things like Miley. As a fan of Robin’s too, I’m kind of disappointed at some of the turns he’s taking in his career. He’s looking so foolish now.

    I thought that I would never say this…
    I thought this year’s BET Awards totally out-performed… out-shined and out-classed this year’s MTV Awards. It would be even better if the stage handlers for the BET Awards show could change the lighting format for this show… But that’s my personal beef.
    I can say the same thing with this year’s Grammy Awards show.
    The ‘up side’ to this award show is that I have a rebuttal, whenever someone brings up the “Isn’t it racist for BET to exist?”

    The look of disgust on Jaden’s face has done me in. His face pretty much sums up my feelings about Miley Cyrus.

  25. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Miley is basically done went and hit rock bottom then pulled out a chisel and an ax and started digging deeper. She’s trying to out do Madonna/Janet/Britney and yet she does not have the skill set or the skilled behind the scenes technicians needed to come up with some decent workable concepts. We get that Hannah Montana is dead…but ‘Grown Azz’ Miley is DOA at this point. Don’t watch awards shows and don’t have cable…but the mockery and shock that was shown by her industry peers makes me sad for her…just a tinch…and no more than that.

  26. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    That was so bad I was screaming “nooooooooooooo, this cant be really happening”. Hell, all she really needed was the BlACK-FACE makeup on to show how terrible, ignorant, and races her performance felt.

  27. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Two hrs. worth of nothing, indeed;VMA’s do not live up to the hype. I think I’ll skip it next year.

  28. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Miley needs the Amanda Bynes treatment. Billy Ray needs to take this child to court and get her some treatment because something is wrong with this chick! A mess! If I wasn’t done with MTV/VMA’s before, this little performance sealed the deal!

    oh miley…….am praying for you

  30. August 26, 2013 - Reply

    Yeah Miley’s performance was extremely stank on so many levels but hey…. Most of the performances were weird i.e. Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Miley, etc except for Bruno Mars. His performance was outstanding. I was like, YES! FINALLY! Somebody who can give a decent, normal performance lol. I loved it!

      Girl, you and I both. I don’t have the patience, and I honestly can’t tell one awards show from the next. It’s like they interchange the same people.

      Besides, in the age of the Internet, it’s no longer necessary to watch any of them. All you have to do is hit the web the next day to catch the highlights and gossip and it’s like you were right there anyway.

        I suppose most people are upset because the woman basically white-washed herself over the years to gain popularity (and still lost it). In my opinion, she looks like a vague Nicki Minaj from about 100 feet away.
