Taraji P. Henson Apologizes to Police for Racial Profiling Allegation

taraji-2

Taraji P. Henson has issued an apology to the LAPD after alleging her son, Marcel Johnson, was racially profiled during a traffic stop. In an interview with Uptown magazine, Henson recounted two instances of alleged profiling of her son. One happened during the stop she apologized and another on the campus of USC.

According to the LA Times, Henson says she overreacted. The Times obtained a 40 minute video of Johnson’s traffic violation. On Friday, via an Instagram message,Henson posted her apology.

“I would like to publicly apologize to the officer and the Glendale Police Department,” Henson wrote. “A mother’s job is not easy and neither is a police officer’s. Sometimes as humans WE overreact without gathering all the facts. As a mother in this case, I overreacted and for that I apologize. Thank you to that officer for being kind to my son.”

During Johnson’s traffic violation, which occurred when he ran through a yellow light on a pedestrian crosswalk, the officer was cordial with him, even after he admitted to having weed.

“I appreciate you being honest with me about the weed,” the officer says. “I do appreciate that because I do smell weed.”

Johnson was issued a citation for possession of marijuana, but let him go for running the yellow light.

“I’m gonna give you a citation for the marijuana,” the officer says in the video. “Listen, I’m not gonna give you a citation for running that yellow, because that’ll actually put a moving violation on your driver’s license, and you’re gonna have to do traffic school and all that stuff. So I’m helping you out by not giving you a violation on that. All I’m gonna do is take the weed.”

Damn! So, the son lied to his mom about what happen, which would explain her overreaction. Wish he had informed her of what actually occurred prior to Taraji making a public spectacle about her black son and racial discrimination that our people have to endure on a daily bases. I’m sure that it come across to white America that “we’re the boy that cried wolf,” looking for every opportunity to play the race card. I just hope that this incident doesn’t have a backlash effect on her role on Empire and the success of show. It shouldn’t, but we all know how sensitive “they” can be.

Just check out Yahoo!’s page. Less than 10 comments, and they are already blaming her. The most “liked” comment is saying that Taraji has lost a fan. This boy is messing with his mother’s coins.

Taraji has worked so hard. She is finally getting the recognition that she deserves, and her son may derail it all. It’s nothing but the devil……

Her son is not very smart. Taraji’s acting checks are paying his tuition, and now he is putting both his tuition money and her career in jeopardy. I feel like screaming…..

omg. I didn’t think of it like that but you’re right! This could mess up Taraji’s livelihood/legacy knowing how this blew up. Hollywood will be side eyeing her with this controversy. What a scumbag son. I want to spit in his face for making Taraji look like a fool and a liar when things are going so well for her.

I would bet that same person with the most liked comment has never even watched Empire before, and never knew who Taraji was until this story. “They” like to make up stories like this in gleeful anticipation of a successful Black person’s downfall.

Her son is definitely at fault but Taraji should have been careful and got the facts before speaking out about it publicly just for the sake of her image. We all make mistakes and she gave a great, sincere apology. Hopefully she’ll be fine. You know her son got an ass whooping too lol…

Wait, if it wasn’t that serious, why would you even tell your mother at all? Just pay the citation and don’t even tell any one. That’s what I’d do *shrug*

He probably thought that he was being slick….piggy backing on all of these police brutality cases from the last two or three years.

I have a suggestion for Taraji for his punishment. Marcel needs to be responsible for paying 100% of this tuition, book fees, room and board going forward. He needs to work a normal, 9 to 5 job. Taraji needs to cut off all financial support. If Marcel can’t find a job, then oh well. He can re-enroll in college when he finds the money.

They are saying that he also had Ritalin in the car. Marcel is clearly entitled because his mother has been a Hollywood star for several years.

I would love to bring him to my hometown to show him the conditions that tax paying Black citizens live in. There are people suffering out here. There is real racial profiling going on, and Marcel needs a reality check.

Well now that I think about it there are somethings that don’t make sense. I looked around and here are some things that stood out to me about this incident the police said. He they released an edited video, the son ran a yellow light and a pedestrian was in danger because of this. One, the video that they actually released was edited. What’s in the unedited version? Two, there no such thing as “running a yellow light” and it’s not illegal, and shouldn’t the pedestrian be the on cited since he/she was jaywalking technically? Hmmm.

From what I understand, California has very strict laws about stopping when pedestrians are in a crosswalk.

Dang, he’s SO LUCKY you aren’t his mother. Then again, if she were “that kind of mom” he wouldn’t be so dang spoiled in the first place. This coming from a spoiled only child.

Is that sarcasm? Is there a reason that you are taking this so personally? Marcel, is that you?

People are dying out here, Marcel…Wake up!!!

            ?
What am i taking personally? I just thought your approach was a little harsh. At the same time, if he had a mom like you, he wouldnt be spoiled in the first place. Thats all i was saying. Sorry you took that as an attack. Jesus.

Wait a minute. So her son lied?

There are people online dragging her, but she did nothing wrong.

She is a mother, and most mothers believe their children when they tell them something.

Her son is the only one at fault here.

I don’t care if he is 20 years old. He needs to have his tail spanked for this.

There are Black people in this country being hanged and beat within an inch of their life for nothing, and lies like this will be used to discredit real cases of racial profiling and police brutality.

This is another reason that we have such unity problems. There is no room for lying about racial profiling. There are people actually dying out here. I could snatch a knot in her son myself. SMH

LOL. I GOT IT! Wait for it…

Okay, she needs to make him stand on the corner of Exposition and Figueroa with one of those big, body signs saying, “I lied to my mom about racial profiling.”

Then she should pull him out of USC and instead of sending him to Howard, she should send him over here to L.A. Southwest Community College in Inglewood…

alright, fine…he can go to El Camino College instead.

    THERE!

She gave a proper apology which is more than can be said for all the non apologies and deflections that occur when the shoe is on the other foot of course the Faux News/yahoo haters are not going to focus on this
Her son was so wrong he now becomes the convenient excuse for some people to drag up when real racial profiling is taking place

When I was that kid’s age and older, I had white cops give me breaks on tickets. There is an element of classism in black/cop interactions, and this kid benefitted from it. He needs to to spend some time in the actual hood, so he can experience how it goes down with cops who have had to deal with actual thugs and now assume every black man or boy is a criminal.

As a parent, just dealing with my kids at school has taught me to always question my kids’ stories. I hate Taraji had such a public embarrassment.

I have looked at the video of the traffic stop too. Regardless, finding out the truth is very important. Taraji P. Henson is certainly more honorable than others who want to either ignore the epidemic or police terrorism or refuse to find the truth about a situation. She apologized and she was sincere about it. Her apology though never negates the reality of how racial profiling is a serious problem not only in America, but throughout the world. Her son should not have made her go through that at all. People have been abused of their rights all of the time. You can tell that Taraji P. Henson loves his son a lot. You can tell that she is a great mother. His son can learn lessons, but his deception involving this incident is so wrong on his part. Reactionaries already are using this event as a means for them to once again slander all Black Lives Matter Movement members and all social activists for justice (as liars and exaggerators).

At the end of the day, we have to fight for freedom and make sure that we show the facts at the same time.

I love you Taraji, you know I do, but when you are in the public eye, take a beat and wait before saying anything. It’s not like one of us where it can be forgotten easily. Now for that son, he’d have to pay his way through college for a month! I don’t know or no Empire watching for an entire season. Now, THAT is punishment! 🙂

AHHH! I hate this! I hope this doesn’t affect her roles as a public outcry over such things usually affects people’s livelihoods. I’m so happy she’s being recognized, even though it’s over Empire. I loved her in Person of Interest and was gutted when she was killed off.

I’m sure a certain demographic are having a field day screaming, “I told you they overreact!” Sigh…
