Steve Harvey Botches Miss Universe Pageant

Steve Harvey had one job at the end of last night’s Miss Universe and that was to announce the winner. Pretty simple, ya think?

Well not for Harvey.

As Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, took her winner’s walk down the aisle. She basically got her crown snatched.

Then Harvey walked up to Arevalo and had to tell her she was actually the first runner-up. It was Miss Philippines who should have been crowned.

According to Harvey’s SnapChat story, the teleprompter was the one in the wrong.

Harvey did issue an apology, twice, because the first one had typos:

Let’s try that apology one more time:

    I just can’t believe these pageants are still going on. Nevertheless, I felt bad for Steve. To err is human…he apologized so what else can be done? I do feel bad for Miss. Columbia. I can imagine that was a HUGE disappointment.

    Even though I’m not much of a fan, cut Steve some slack. He made a mistake. The man is human and I’m sure felt terrible

  3. December 21, 2015 - Reply

    People need to let it go. Folks are out there calling him the N word and dragging him for filth. Seriously, it’s not that deep, and even though I don’t always agree with his views, I feel truly sorry for him right now.

    Until this, I thought there was fairly widespread support for Steve Harvey in the Black community (judging by how popular his stupid books seem to be), but that doesn’t necessarily seem to be the case. I’m all for calling out his misogyny and backward ideas about relationships, but that has nothing to do with this. Everyone deserves a chance to move forward from an honest mistake (all the more so when they’ve sincerely apologized) – even Steve Harvey.

      Those relationship books of his are the worst.

    I heard of this news during the morning. I don’t view his mistake on this front as the monumental error that some made it out to be. As far as I’m concerned, he apologized for his mistake, the person who won the pageant ultimately received her crown, and at some point, folks have to move forward. We live in a social media age, so some people will call him every name under the sun. I disagree with Steve Harvey on many issues, but he shouldn’t be called derogatory, inappropriate names because of his mistake. It’s not that deep.

  6. December 21, 2015 - Reply

    I personally don’t see the big deal. Is it embarrassing yes, but if it was a mistake it was a mistake. All you can do is apology and move on but then again I don’t take these pageants seriously…shrug. But if looks could kill Steve Harvey would be dead because Miss Columbia had a death stare in her eyes…lol.

      LOL. 🙂

    i just read this article on another site, along with the tweets that accompanied his error and his apology. steve harvey was no longer addressed as steve harvey. he was referred to as ‘ stupid ni**ger’ followed by ‘go back to africa, monkey.’ this is so very sad and really disturbing to see such hatred for making a mistake.

  8. December 21, 2015 - Reply

    Yes this was a human mistake and he should not be called ugly names, but I have little sympathy for a Black man who proudly tells the world how he ‘doesnt give a damn about slavery”.

      @vintage3000

      Lol, he sure will give a damn now that he’s being called n*gger for making a mistake. These new blacks who think their money/ fame shields them from being black are all gonna learn one by one

      • December 21, 2015 - Reply

        @Queen Ekuba

        Yep. We should make a list of new blacks who need this kind of wake up call in 2016.

      @vintage3000

      His comment about slavery is reprehensible and a disrespect to our black ancestors indeed.

      Thank you, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t admit to smirking at this…maybe this little incident will help him pump his brakes! on being everywhere running his country mouth. Time for him to sat down and shut up.

          Right Brother T? I mean I don’t condone assorted bigots making racist comments at large–somebody need to shut that down. But I admit to just a teensy bit of schadenfreude at the situation.

            @elle D.

            I feel you. I know exactly what you mean Sister. He or Steve have made many misogynistic statements that I will never agree with it. His comments about slavery are beyond the pale to put it lightly. The New Blacks think that everything is peaches and cream and it a’int that way at all.

                  We shall see, but his gigantic ego might not let him wake up yet…if he gets enough support through this mishap, he will probably come back swinging…

                    The choice is up to him. He knows the truth. He knows that there is massive racism in the world from West Virginia to other places globally.

    I’m not a fan of Steve Harvey. I hate how he feels entitled to lecture women on relationships when he has not been able to hold down his own relationship & I can never get over his comment about how he doesn’t care about slavery. So, at this point, I really wanna be petty & talk about how he couldn’t even get through emceeing a simple beauty pageant but he wants to tell women how to live their complex lives, but help me Jesus I won’t! lol. On a more serious note, the error he made wasn’t a big deal & he swiftly apologized for it & it’s disgusting that people (including some Colombians) are using this as an opportunity to be racist & talk about monkeys & n*ggers. Funny how some of these Hispanics forget about their very obvious African roots & desperately want to be white!

    • December 21, 2015 - Reply

      @Queen Ekuba

      I also read about how many Afro-Colombians are fighting for their rights in Colombia. They are protesting the racism found in Colombia.

    • December 21, 2015 - Reply

      @Queen Ekuba

      Word. I bet those same Columbians (lol) calling him racial slurs would kill their mothers for free plastic surgery to alter their African or other non European features. Besides im sure they are salty that Miss Phillippines is sooo much prettier than their dime a dozen bleached blond south american barbie.

    This here is a hiccup that will give ms. colombia greater press as the ms. universe that wasn’t than she would have received as the 1st runner up.

    So, colombia, You’re Welcome!

    Wow! People are so upset about a human mistake. A lot of people are acting like Steve named the winner of the 2016 Presidential Election.

    I can’t say much about the pageant because I have 0% knowledge about it. However, I don’t think it’s that important.

    I read about his mistake and moved on. There are larger issues going on right now. If Miss Universe can cure cancer or find Waldo, I really don’t care.

    Of all the people who blew this mistake out of proportion, and called him derogatory names, how much money did they make posting the ish versus how much money he STILL made even after the mistake, and that includes some of our own people who have issues with him?

    Hey, Clutch, Nicki Minaj just performed for the brutal dictator of Angola, who has had people murdered, pillaged over 32 mil from his own people, and you’re giving Steve Harvey shade for crowning the wrong contestant of a beauty contest?

    I don’t even know why beauty pageants are still going on today.

  15. December 22, 2015 - Reply

    Brings to mind the last pageant I had any knowledge of due to media attention. The contestant was asked a question re: terrorism/terrorists and her response was “beauty” Pageant School textbook answer, “Love, Peace, Hope”.

    MONEY is why these pageants(“a pretentious display or show that conceals a lack of real importance or meaning”) continue to exist.

    ETA: The pageant industry is a sanitized version of the sex industry. Both industries profit from peddling female flesh.

    I was never a Steve Harvey’s fan.

    Didn’t like when he made idiotic comments about atheists, slavery, and his dating advice.

    Damn, this is embarrassing! One question, though why do we still have these Miss and Beauty Pageant competitions in the 21st Century. I know we all like to viewed as attractive, good-looking and stuff but I don’t get why we still have these shows.

    this may be harsh but… I could care less about Steve or this incident. frankly, Steve is a clown to me and I’m not only over his attempts to make black women the blame for every wrong ever done to them but also, I’m highly over the way he panders to white people and kisses their collective asses. this incident should be the wake up call he needs to have a true come-to-Jesus moment but… with his inflated sense of self…we know it won’t. I just wonder…I see all of these black folk going hard for him. where are all the white folk he idolizes? why have they not been out here on twitter or IG backing him up? oh yeah…they don’t care. smh

    i cant stand him..im sorry a little part of me was secretly happy that this happened…i know i know wrong right….LOL!….im sick of seeing him anyway
