R. Kelly Really Wants Black Folks to Buy His Album, But He’s a Pedophile, So…

RKelly

Apparently, being allowed to close out this year’s Soul Train Music Awards wasn’t enough for R. Kelly. Now, he wants y’all to buy his new album too.

The controversial singer recently took to YouTube to make a plea to Black people to support his latest record, The Buffet, which sold around 28,000 copies since it was released on Friday.

During the video, Kelly attempted to shame Black music lovers, telling them, “We gotta start supporting each other.”

“I bust my ass going around doing shows to survive, but I do this for the love,” Kelly said. “But come on, at some point we gotta start supporting each other. Everybody supports every other category of music, we gotta start supporting each other.”

Kelly, who went on to complain about his lack of support, not only by music fans, but also his record label, concluded: “I want my people to get behind me.”

Umm….ok.

I suppose Kellz could chalk his lack of sales up to Black people not buying “real music” these days, or perhaps, folks just feel some type of way about hearing songs about sex from a pedophile.

Or maybe it’s just me.

    (Along with the whole pedophilia scandal karma) R. Kelly’s music is just starting to sound dated. The generation of young folks who use their discretionary income to buy music ain’t checking for music from an almost 50 year old man singin’ about sex. Back in the 90’s Kelly was at the top of his game with major support from the black community, but what he seems to fail to realize is that this is the way the music industry works. He’s doing the same thing he was doing in the 90’s and it’s not working.

      First RKelly is a pedo. 2. I love the insight of this comment. You are so right. JLo, Madonna, and others who kind of made sex a part of their act were not able to transform. Nothing wrong with consensual sex between adults but I think that you are correct. The young folks are the ones buying new music. Older generations have a nice collection by now. Prince and Janet Jackson have done it effortlessly. 3. RKelly is a Pedo.

    Ephobophile. Still disgusting and still illegal and yes, it’s only a slight distinction, but still. I’ll take my lumps because I’ve seen other people catch hell for calling him ephobophile instead of pedophile, but if someone takes that as me trying to minimize what he does or cover for him, nope, just saying what he is, which is plenty bad. In truth, he’s always been gross to me, even before I found out he was a predatory junior high gym teacher type. My sisters and I never took him seriously in the early days because we thought he was trying too hard and took some pretty silly stuff and himself way too seriously ‘You remind me of my car’? Continue, poet. Then, as if the allegations, secret marriage and *that* video weren’t horrifying enough, he does whatever ‘Trapped in the Closet’ was. Not to say that it’s on the same level as all of his crimes, I’m just saying that there isn’t anything there tethering him to any obligation on our part to remember him with any fondness. “Laughing all the way to the bank’, sure, but does he know that people weren’t laughing *with* him? He wasn’t even laughing though, was he? I’ve never watched it in full but the bits I’ve seen, and the people ridiculing them to accompany said clips make me wonder if that whole saga was conceived of and completed under the cover of sobriety.

    I’ve never supported this guy, t thought his music was ‘blah’, he only ever sang about one subject and whenever he took off his sunglasses his cold, blank eyes would send a chill through my very soul. They’re one step below Rasputin’s– or Karl Lagerfeld’s (look him up without glasses, or don’t). Just go away R. Kelly. Go away, lie to yourself and say that people don’t want you because their tastes are vapid and you’re just too much music for them to handle, instead of the fact that you’re gross and repetitve. Go and wax your Jeep and just be glad you’re not in prison.

      I love that I had to go look up the word, Ephobophile; never heard it before but was Aaliyah even 15 when he started molesting her? I was of the impression most of the girls were like 13, 14 age range. Maybe I’m wrong but whatever, I won’t ever support him but I had a convo with a brotha awhile back and he asked me why I wouldn’t go to any R. Kelly concert and I point blank said: He’s a pedophile. I’m not financing that shit. His reply: But yeah, he’s talented as hell and has some good music…I looked at him like he had 2 heads..like dude you have kids, what if these were YOUR children? I’ll never support this freak and I’m glad so many others feel the same. Don’t know if it’s just the nature of the music industry (it seems that most artists don’t make much money off of cd sales) or if it’s people’s conscience. Unfortunately, I think it’s the former but karma sometimes is slow to catch up so I’ll take it. Dirty bastid.

        ‘He’s a pedophile. I’m not financing that shit.’

        There it is. I’m not exactly a fan of John Lennon, but he famously said something to the effect of, ‘What if someone declared a war and no one showed up?’ We don’t have to support people like this. I think she was fourteen of fifteen when he ‘married’ her and he was knocking on 30.

        Yeah, what if they were his kids? I hate that kind of attitude that some guys have that only see women in terms of ownership. That brotha doesn’t care about the dignity of women because he has no personal stake in it. Jay-Z called women every name under the book , but suddenly it became inappropriate when he had a daughter, and we’re supposed to laud him for it. The same goes for guys who will only stop bothering a woman after it’s revealed that she’s with another guy, someone else ‘owns’ her. Black Lives Matter really ought to be called ‘Black Men’s Lives Matter’ because they resolutely don’t give a shit about the women.

        I think that in turning away from the racism and elitism that characterizes mainstream feminism, a lot of guys decided that means women are turning away from rejecting sexism wholesale. When they hear anything that resembles feminist discourse coming from black women, these guys tell women that they’ve sold out the community to ally with racist white women, or that they’ve been brainwashed. Nice little bullying tactic, to undermine people into working against their own interests to calm of the shame of shouts about disloyalty. Heck, in this thread I was a called a psycho and effectively a hypocrite for not playing ‘ride or die’ for a rapist.

        I think the bulk of their money comes from touring.

    I think he’s out of touch with music today. He’s a very good songwriter for OTHER artists, but I’ve never liked him singing his music. His “I think I can fly” has a good hook, but the lyrics are just meh. And he’s made a ton of money off of that one song.
    Most artists are now 360 artists: they do everything they can to make buck – tour, events, Broadway, TV, movies, etc. He should stop considering himself just a singer.

    R. Kelly is not a pedophile by the strict definition of that term. A pedophile is an adult who has sex with a prepubescent child. Kelly is an ephebophile (the primary or exclusive sexual attraction to people in their mid to late adolescents). Biologically speaking, people in their mid to late adolescents are young adults. In many or most countries, people around that age are legally allowed to have sex or marry an adult of any age. I think it’s strange for a 30 year old man to be primarily or exclusively attracted to a woman of that age but it’s not pedophilia, which is deeply wrong and fucked up.

      It’s statutory rape whether you make that distinction or not. It’s an arbitrary distinction the law doesn’t make. If my daughter was 12 instead of 15 I wouldn’t think his sleeping w her was somehow sex between consenting adults. Do you know who Jared the Subway weight loss guy? He just went to prison for years because of the same thing R. Kelly has been accused.

      • December 24, 2015 - Reply

        @Michael Lewis

        Statutory rape is a legal term. I’m speaking in terms of ethics (the philosophy of morality). The field of anthropology has taught me that people often follow a moral prescription as a matter of tradition or custom. Our culture effectively extends childhood all the way to our early twenties due to the needs of the industrial system. That is largely the reason why we have our current views on teenage sexuality. A fifteen year old female may be young but she is not a child. I merely think that R Kelly was too mature for her age, and sexual urinating is disgusting.

        • December 28, 2015 - Reply

          @JML

          Your ethical quandary ignores the mental maturity of the rapist and his victims. The brain does not fully mature until 25. R. Kelly is famous, rich and deviant. His appeal to a 15 year old with limited experience is coercion at best and predatory rape more honestly.
