Open Thread: Let’s Discuss Empire’s Season Finale

Screen Shot 2015-03-19 at 9.36.33 AM

Two whole nail-biting hours. And here’s what we’re left with (and in no particular order).

1) Lucious is the devil.

2) Lucious is the devil and he isn’t dying from ALS. Ain’t that some bullshit.

3) Cookie tried to kill the devil, I mean Lucious, but she didn’t have it in her. Lucious also learned from the cameras that Cookie tried to kill her. What in the world is a “ghetto rat”?

4) Hakeem turned scapegoat and banged his could-have-been step-mother in an act of revenge for his father sending his AARP girlfriend, played by Naomi Campbell, away.

5) Girl Fight! Finally, Cookie and Anika brawled like they were extras on Fight Club.

6) Jennifer Hudson’s character saw those dollar bills and went secular in a flash.

7) Wait, so you’re telling me a candle holder held by a woman who looks like she doesn’t weigh more than a buck-twenty five was able to kill Vernon?

8) OMG, Kelly Rippa’s look-a-like is pregnant!

9) Lucious is still the devil.

10) But Lucious’ family has something in store for him.

11) Bye Lucious, you’re going down.

12) At least, until someone bails you out of jail.

13) Who knew Jamal had some Lucious in him as he held their rival over the ledge.

14) Bring back Malcolm! He did Cookie’s cookies right.

15) Cookie, girl, you should have left with Malcolm.

Clutchettes, what did you think of the season finale? If I missed anything, leave it in the comment section!

    i’m SO glad they killed this als story line. 1. i knew he had to survive somehow b/c otherwise the show would only last a couple seasons. 2. 97% of als patients are WHITE MEN. the chances of lucius being 1 of the 3% of unexpected cases was just so unbelievable. & i really hated the bandwagon of that damn bucket challenge driving this show when lee daniels could have used it as a platform to highlight diseases that really do affect the black community severely. we have brothers & sisters suffering from sickel cell, lupus, & a host of other congenital diseases that don’t normally get caught until it’s too late b/c we typically have the worst access to healthcare. why couldn’t the focus be more relevant. anyway, that’s about as much relief as i will feel over lucius not dying b/c that man is EVIL!

    i was so disappointed in jamal. he was supposed to be the one that got to the top honorably. how you gonna turn around & be your daddy’s hinchman? i really wish he didn’t do it.

    part of me is glad dre is trying to find peace w/his maker. he needs to take his wife w/him next time he goes b/c that whole “i pimp you, you pimp me, we get money” situation they got going on was just sad & disturbing.

    i wasn’t feeling j-hud’s voice.

    why’d they have to kill off malik??? now they have no family friends & it’s just turning into a crab barrell. this family needs some redemption quick. malik & jussie’s characters got me bent this episode.

    lucius makes me wanna vomit. which is ironic b/c this is the first character that terrance has played that has gotten such a strong reaction outta me. maybe he should stick to the small screen b/c i was not a fan of his movie resume.

    i hope they don’t get rid of cookie’s boo. i wanna see his story too for some reason. even if it doesn’t end w/cookie. i hope he’s in dc getting his money right so he can come back for cookie in a big way.

    i don’t like the idea of this hostile takeover. i hate when other folks money get mixed in w/family money. that’s the quickest way to watch your family name be taken by some strangers who end up locking you out. this beef shoulda stayed in-house.

    i don’t trust anika & never will. especially after she had almost-pedofile-sex w/hakim. that was just gross. i feel bad for hakim. clearly his momma issues are gonna take a few more episodes to get over. 1st camille, now anika. hopefully next is therapy.

    i’m glad tiana was still around. she needs a bigger role.

    so i’m still not the most pro-lgbt person around, but OMG jussie’s “so what i’m gay” song was so powerful. he might be the person to turn me all the way ally. i can’t not-root for him.

      Thank you, Me. You summed it up without me having to type. LOL! Except, are we really sure Vernon is dead? I don’t know????

        🙂 it’s a good show. this season of shows truly had me rushing home to a weeknight schedule for the first time in a long time. the only thing i would say about empire is that the story seemed to move too quick. i was expecting a little more build up between episodes, but they put a lot into each hr. so i had to rewatch almost all the episodes to make sure i didn’t miss anything. i’m looking forward to next season regardless.

          It really is a good show! I agree wholeheartedly about the stories moving quickly. He has so many things going on that you can’t settle into the story line. I should re-watch it too.

          I actually like the fast pace. I couldn’t stand how slow the Have and Have Nots used to drag out.

      @Me: You pretty much summed it up. I was not feeling J-Hudson’s singing either

        She’s always screaming/singing. I wonder does she scream/sing lullabies to her son like that.

      I don’t think that Cookie’s boyfriend went to D.C. I think he stayed and still works for Luscious.

    I loved it! It was crazy, sometimes over-the-top but I loved it. I wanted more Cookie though. Can’t wait for next season. Also, how can I get that coat Cookie wore to the cabin in the snow? Diva. Love Taraji in this.

      “Over-the-top” is the word my sister used, K.C. It truly was.

    I loved it. So many things were going on. I’ll have to watch a few more times because it was kind of all over the place. I’m looking forward to Season 2

        I don’t think they should use so many different directors, and the screenwriters need to get their act together. It definitely was all over the place.

    I am so ready for season 2. Too bad we have to wait until January 2016. I do not think Vernon is dead. I knew Jamal had some Lucious of him no matter what his sexual orientation, I want Malcolm and Cookie to hook up Lucious had that coming, and who knew Hakeem and Anika would hook up then again this is a drama.

      @Ajavee

      January 2016! Say it ain’t so, Ajavee! Unfortunately, Vernon is dead. Malik Yoba said they wrote him out the show. 🙁

      Girl, Hakeem KNEW he was wrong for that, and for that rap against his dad. His dad nearly knocked his head off.

        @noirluv45

        lol. that rap was SO BOLD! he shoulda just stayed his angry tail home.

        Ooh no Vernon:-(.. Hakeem bettea been glad Lucious only punched him out. Yeah January of next year we gotta wait.

          @Ajavee

          I thought that maybe they were making us THINK he was dead, but I read they wrote him out. 🙁

          I cannot believe they are making us wait almost a year. That is insane!

    I am so ready for season 2 but I disliked the finale the pace was horrible you know they thought the series wasn’t getting renewed with that finale. But seriously don’t let von peeples direct anymore I hated the angles and lighting.

      @Anonin

      i agree. i was thinking for the whole season that the pace must’ve been b/c they wanted to get as much in b4 fox pulls their old tired tricks again & yanks them off before the series got fully developed. it wouldn’t be the first time a good black show got moved to a new time slot & then deleted altogether with no finale once that network got the ratings it was looking for. i’m conviced the network strategy must be to get black viewers in on one show so that they end up watching the show that comes on immediately before or after that black show & once the ratings for the non-black shows tick up, they pull the black show, assuming the black folks will stay hooked on the non-black shows left behind. hopefully next season will be a little more natural, but i can’t blame them for trying to get as much as they can from the network before they get got. you gotta be twice as slick to get yours while these white networks try to bleed you dry.

        Yep. You are very smart. Steve Harvey has discussed this publicly before. That’s how the WB and UPN networks were started. It was a very purposeful strategy.

    I didn’t care for Jennifer Hudson’s singing on the show.

      I didn’t care for her singing while two gay men are having s*x. I’m out.

        You have to blame the director for that.

          Im a hypocrite. I know that many celebs dont believe in Christianity; however, my feelings get hurt when blasphemous scenes are shown. I let go of friends and excoworkers who posted blasphemy on social media because if I’m following them, He might feel as if I’m not following Him. Im sure, soon I wont be watching TV at all. SMH.

      She’s got a beautiful and powerful voice, but she never knows when to pull it back. Also, her acting was TERRIBLE.

        @AdebisisHat

        I agree! That is it!! She has a beautiful voice, I think it is more suited for gospel or ballads but when she sings pop music it just does not fit.

          @GoldenGirl

          Agreed. I think she doesn’t feel like she’s really singing unless she’s doing the most. You can’t belt EVERY song ever.

    The exchange between Becky (Gabby Sidebe) and Hakeem when he asked her about her name being Becky she said because she had a white mother was funny.

    I loved that the season finale was two hours. At first I didn’t want to watch this show, but too many in my circle were watching and talking, so I caved in and got hooked! They are all crazy as hell but I am so entertained! I hated that Malcolm left. I loved him and Cookie together, but I just loved looking at him. Someone posted that the next season is Jan 2016! That’s so unfair. Oh well I guess I’ll catch up on House of Cards and some other things I never watched.

      i really thought mj was about to get her life together up until that last episode. she has a whole lot of growing left before she can just “be” mary jane. i think gabrielle is doing a great job in the role though. at first i was turned off by her chasing married men, but the story has a really great development & now i’m invested. once that’s done i’m going to catch up on scandal & see what all the hoopla has been about. (or maybe i’ll just find something to do outdoors… this hermit life is for the birds & i really need to break out of it soon)

        @Me

        Yeah I did too. I’m still watching the show because it is good and I like that they touch on topics that matter to us. I like Gabrielle Union. I have nothing against her, but have this love/hate feeling for Mary Jane.
        As far as Scandal goes…I’m not sure if I’m going to continue watching. I used to be a die hard gladiator, but HTGAWM blew me away. An American Crime is pretty good so far and I’m waiting on OITNB.

    They were doing too much with that balcony scene and I had to change the channel when Jamal started singing about being gay in the rap battle. That was the last straw for me. I’m not homophobic but that scene got me mad. That’s how corny it was. I did like the season though! But from what I saw (didn’t see anything past that rap battle) I was disappointed with the direction of the finale. It didn’t do anything for me.
