Mos Def seems to be in a bit a trouble with what has been described as an unrecognized “world passport”. The rapper was has been given 14 days to leave South Africa after he violated local immigration laws when he tried to leave the country.
Mos Def was arrested on Thursday at Cape Town International Airport, according to the Department of Home Affairs spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete.
According to Tshwete, the rapper presented the “world passport” when he was leaving the country.
The 42-year-old entertainer entered the country on an American passport in 2013 and overstayed his visitor’s permit by 2014, the spokesman said.
A court order to leave the country means the rapper is banned from South Africa for five years, but may appeal to officials for leniency, Tshwete said. Mos Def appeared alongside family members who were also in the country without a permit, the spokesman said.
Mos Def has been living in Cape Town since May 2013.

Love his work, but he is starting to grate on my nerves. Take care of your personal business Dude — privately. The rest of us have our own problems to deal with — Muck yours.

The issue deals with the laws in South Africa (as it relates to passports) and the type of passport in his possession. There has been immigration and travel issues involving Mos Def for years. I hope for the best for Mos Def.

Hello Sister. He is known to have criticized U.S. policies involving Katrina and Guantanamo Bay (which some people tortured detainees there). Back in 2014, he was denied entry into the United States (because of immigration matters). That is why he’s in South Africa. I don’t know if he’s banned from entering the USA now completely, but these traveling issues have been with him for years. Bless you Sister.
