Misty Copeland, along with the American Ballet Theater, is heading to Detroit. On the heels of becoming the ABT’s first black principal dancer, Copeland is joining ABT’s cast of The Sleeping Beauty at the Detroit Opera House in spring 2016.
Copeland, who recently became engaged to her boyfriend of 10 years, has skyrocketed in ballet over the last couple of years. She not only brings diversity, but it’s a welcomed change, especially to Walter Brown, an official with the Michigan Opera Theater.
Copeland has been a champion for diversity throughout her career and has her star power rises, so will opportunities for other black ballerinas.
Although The Sleeping Beauty opens in the spring, there’s no word yet as to what Copeland’s role will be. Here’s to hoping that she capture the title role.
