Marvel Created Its First Pre-Teen Black Girl Superhero

moon_240x340_39Meet Lunella Lafayette. She’s a pre-teen with some extra-special abilities. Also, meet her sidekick, who happens to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Chances are, if you’re a comic book fan, you’ll thoroughly enjoy Marvel’s newest comic Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a reimaging of a 1978 comic book that really didn’t take off. In this new version Lunella and the dinosaur are in present day NYC battling obstacles and solving problems.

The artist behind Moon Girl is excited to bring more diversity to Marvel.

“It’s great to be a part of the creation of something which can mean something special to so many people,” she said. “I myself have come up against this dilemma (I’m half Afro-Brazilian and half Chilean besides being Spanish) of finding few or no cultural references, especially in Spain, a country where there is isn’t any community comparable to the African American community in the states.”

“It’s really important that the mainstream throws up new references like these and it’s an honor to be a part of that change that Marvel is bringing to the comic book creative landscape,” she continued.

We can’t wait to get our hands on this in the fall!

I love the fact that the dinosaur from “Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.” was included. This will provide opportunities for Moon Girl to pop up in the animated series and the live action movies.
