The Queen of the Gladiators is back — and covering the September 2015 issue of Self magazine. In the glossy’s fall issue, the notoriously private Kerry Washington opens up about how she balances being a wife, mom, and the star of one of the most popular shows on television.
The one thing that keeps the gorgeous 38-year-old going is her commitment to staying in shape.
“I have to take care of myself in order to live life the way I want to,” Washington explained. “It’s important to have rest days. But in the long run, if I don’t work out for, like, three days, I feel worse, not better.”
Though she often goes on hikes with her Scandal co-stars, the actress wakes up early to head to her Pilates class. It’s keeps her toned and centered.
“There are a lot of forms of exercise where you have to leave yourself out of the room while you force yourself to do this thing,” she told Self.
“With Pilates, I get to bring my true self. I cry, I laugh. I get to go: Where is my body today? What do I need today? How can I take care of myself and push myself past my comfort zone? How can I be both loving and challenging?”
Although she’s one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, what Washington loves most is her family. While she enjoys working out, she’d rather cuddle with her husband, former NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha, and her 18-month old daughter Isabelle, whom she calls a miracle.
So why does Washington work so hard to maintain her body? It’s simple.
“It’s the site of a miracle now,” the actress explained. “I don’t want to be pre-miracle.”
