Kanye West Launches Music Program For At-Risk Chicago Youth

Donda West Signs Copies of Her New Book, "Raising Kanye" - June 6, 2007

Kanye West is giving back to his community by launching a music program for Chicago’s at-risk youth. The “Got Bars” music writing and production program is a collaboration between Donda’s House-an organization named after his mother Dr. Donda West- and ARK of St. Sabina community center. The goal of “Got Bars” is to educate kids on how to write and record their own music and in turn help them to develop problem-solving skills.  The participants will also learn other life skills from working out to eating well.

“My mom spent her life as an educator and I am happy Donda’s House can pick up the torch and honor her life’s mission,” West said in a statement early last week.

West’s long time friend and producer,  Che “Rhymefest” Smith will run the program along with his wife Donnie Smith. Rhymefest will oversee the music and production aspects of the 10-week course, while his wife Donnie, an English teacher, will serve as executive director.

The program is open to young adults from 15-24.  Applications for “Got Bars?” will be accepted until Friday, August 2. For more information on the program, visit the Donda’s House website.

Sounds great, glad Kanye is doing this for his city and carrying on his mother’s legacy. Lord knows something has to be done. Hopefully this will help the youth in Chicago turn to music and not violence when facing problems. As a young and inspiring music producer, I wish a program like this existed in DC!!

    Good for Kanye,

Dear Don Lemon, this is how you help black America. Not by echoing the negative stereotypes, but through outreach.

    Donda’s House. How nice!

North West will end up in a Whore House. Oh wait, she was already in a Whore House for a number of months before her birth.
