Last night, watching the season finale of American Idol was the farthest thing from my mind until I saw a tweet stating that Janet Jackson was making a surprise appearance. Immediately I turned the tv on and hoped I hadn’t missed her performance. 3/4ths into the show, I thought somebody must have lied, because my ears were verbally assaulted by past idols covering songs by some of my favorites artists, like the Doobie Brothers, Chicago and Christina Aguilera. So because I gave up, I started flipping through the other channels during one of the American Idol commercial breaks. When I finally found my way back to American Idol, once again another song was being butchered, this time it was Janet Jackson’s “Again”. Did they know how sacred the song is? Apparently not, because they picked some of the worst voices to attempt to sing it. Lo’behold (or however that word is spelled, I’m too lazy to check), Janet Jackson appeared on stage, looking like the Black Elvira, and impeccably amazing at the same time!
Now, I will be the first to admit, there are many times when I don’t understand one word Janet Jackson is singing, because of her wispy voice, but during her performance of “Nothing”, I was too mesmerized by her make-up and the outfit to even care.
I was in awe with Janet’s make-up and her slicked back hair style. One thing Janet Jackson has managed to maintain during her musical career is her classy style. Unlike the Gaga’s, Beyonces & Rihannas of today’s music, I have yet to see Janet Jackson walking around in what looks like underwear during any of her performances (onesies are for babies people!). Although her style has evolved throughout the years, she’s never had to rely on being ‘risque’ when it comes to her wardrobe (well minus Justin Timberlake enabled wardrobe malfunctions).
I’ve never had the opportunity to see Janet Jackson perform live, but I’m definitely going to try to make this years Essence Festival, after hearing that she’s one of the headliners. So to the other half naked R&B/Pop chicks out there, let Janet teach y’all something about style and integrity when it comes to fashion & performing.
