There were a lot of naysayers when it came to Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert’s relationship, especially when news hit that the couple put a baby carriage before marriage (because we’re always skeptical of athletes spreading their seed without laying the proper foundation). But Iman is turning out to be the real MVP off the court in the days following the miraculous birth of he and the singer’s daughter, Iman Tayla Shumpert, Jr., also known as Junie.
For starters, the Cleveland Cavalier is the one who delivered his baby girl after Teyana went into birth early Wednesday morning in the bathroom of the couple’s home. According to Good Morning America (GMA), the pro baller’s got quite a knack for ingenuity, using the cord from a pair of Beats headphones to cut the umbilical cord.
Then there’s this adorable video Teyana posted on her Facebook page of Iman singing “Smiley Faces” to his mini-me just two days after she came into the world. Honestly don’t know who’s cuter here, the proud daddy or the two-day old infant. Okay, it’s Junie.
And adding icing to the cake, when Iman and Teyana did a satellite interview with GMA, the 6’5″ shooting guard broke down in tears thinking about the moment he watched his daughter come into the world, proving to be even more emotional than his fianceé sitting next to him and it was hard for us not to cry along with him.
Too often the image of the black father is villainized, especially the black male athlete father, so we’re beyond thrilled to see Iman debunking that image from the get-go, at 25 at that, and proving not only is he a man who’s not afraid to cry, but he’s also not afraid to step up and be the father he’s supposed to be. Let’s hope he becomes an example for more young fathers. Check him out in the video below.
