The Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts and her boyfriend have entered not-guilty pleas to misdemeanor lewd conduct charges. Watts and Brian Lucas were charged last October after being detained by the LAPD –who were investigating a report of a couple having sex in a parked car. The LAPD said Watts and Lucas matched the description of the couple.
Both Watts and Lucas claim they were just kissing in the car and accused the detaining police officer of racial bias and profiling — as Watts is Black and Lucas is white.
Lou Shapiro, Watts and Lucas’s attorney entered the pleas on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
According to Sgt. Jim Parker, one of the LAPD officers involved in the incident, the entire situation could have been avoided if Watts would have provide identification and left the scene. Los Angeles Police Department say officers followed the proper protocols while investigating the call.
In a statement to The Times, Parker claims Watts repeatedly refused to show her identification —which prompted his colleagues to detain her with handcuffs until they could identify her.
“If they had handled this situation in a civil manner, they would have never been charged or detained for that long,” Parker told The Times last fall. “I would have been gone in five minutes.”
If convicted, the couple faces as long as six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
