CNN’s Black In America 2

I’m not sure what’s the lesser of two evils.

BET possibly being left to tell the world about being “Black In America”, or CNN having their second installment of the “Black In America” series. I don’t even want to start to imagine any type of version that BET could possibly come up with, with any of their on-air (lack of) personalities trying to get through the daunting task of telling me what’s “Black In America”.

This week, you’re left with CNN, and Soledad O’Brien, trying to ‘school’ white people on being “Black in America”. Last year I briefly wrote about their first installment and my issues with it. I’m sorry, but the plight of Black America, really can’t be contained in a 2 or 4 hour series, even the Roots movie took a week to tell. In the first series I felt there wasn’t a middle ground, the stories they focused on went from one extreme to another, but I guess that’s sensationalism at it’s best.

CNN’s coverage this week will include interviews with a variety of celebrities. From my favorite, Cicely Tyson:

To Colin Powell:

CNN’s “Black in America 2” coverage airs on July 22nd & 23rd at 8pm, maybe this time they’ll be able to tell me something new about being “Black in America”, not that I haven’t lived it for the past 33 years (uh yeah, I don’t see that happening at all).

I'm sorry, Sis. I love Tyson too, but I will not be watching this program. I'm still too disappointed from the first show. Also, I personally am sick of listening to celebrities. It's fine to have a few here and there. But if you can't mix celebrity interviews with conversations with students, service station workers, women and men working temp jobs with no benefits, forget it.

If you can't indict whites for not wanting to give a brotha jobs or black so-called leaders who go from one killing to another but never build institutions so we can prosper as a people, forget it. I'm sick of programs that play around the edges but never get to the real deal.

    I love your blog!

I didn't see the first installment of Black in America 2 so I can't comment on the differences between the two. I went to a preview screening of the second installment last week and I was surprised and pleased with what appears to be the solution driven focus of the documentary.

One area that stood out for me is the story of James and Tina Barnes and black relationships/marriage. Black love/relationships/marriage is an area of concern for me as it is one of the building blocks of a great society. I shared my thoughts on that preview segment on my blog — You Make Me Sick — titled “Hope for Black Love Restored at CNN Black in America 2 Preview.” Check it out (, if interested.

I didn't see the 1st one, but I may tap into this one for the sake of it. I'm always curious to see what yet AGAIN American media has cooked up to represent black folk. I can't promise that my ADHDSOAPNET disorder wont kick in and I'll be turning to see what's good on the soaps. LOL

my sentiments exactly about mixing celebrities with 'real' life stories….it's all about ratings..they're not fooling anyone.

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely take a look at it! I actually was supposed to attend a screening in DC last week, but it fell off of my radar.

Now, I will say that, yes I'm all for “black love”..but personally, I date all cultures & backgrounds…hopefully one day I'll be able to say that I just found 'love', whether it's black, white, asian, hispanic, etc..etc..

SO I haven't got a chance to view the second installment yet but I'm hearing good news about it today but I must check it out for myself to see if what people are saying is true.
