It’s been 14 years since Aaliyah Dana Haughton, and eight others, died in a plane crash in the Bahamas. At the time, the Princess of R&B had just finished filming a video for “Rock the Boat” from her self-titled album that debuted just the month before.
By all account Aaliyah was on the cusp of super stardom. Though she was already big in the music biz with three hit albums under her belt, at the time of her death, Aaliyah had just begun to cross over to the big screen with starring roles in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned. She was a triple threat–singer, dancer, actress–and poised to take over the entertainment world when her life was tragically cut short.
Since then, Aaliyah’s legacy has continued to remain strong with many in the industry continuing to invoke her name and signature sound, a mixture of pop, hip hop, and R&B.
These days, Aaliyah lives on through her extensive–and straight up dope–catalog of songs that still, more than 20 years later, get the crowd hype.
